Two different species (elf and dragon, human and dragon, human and elf, whatever you want, but preferably both mythical) have been living in a completely different world for centuries.
A major problem happens in (insert one species)'s realm, and the only thing they can do is ask the other species for help. They have a portal they can use to enter the other species' realm. The portal goes both ways. The two characters meet somehow. -

Then I need to make some modifications. How about in this era there is a king, and only he knows about the portal? He enlists an elite force of knights to guard him in case anything goes wrong. This means they know about it too. But one of the knights is not meant to be. He just got dressed up in a knight costume (‘cause something silly happened) and he happened to be dragged along with the knights. -
(That's on the human side. Or, we could just pick a different thing, maybe fairy and elf, or nymph and elf.)
