"I have good news!" Her aunt cheered, serving breakfast. A little see through girl ran down the stairs to the smell of bacon and eggs. "Oh how I miss eating..." She sighed in her British accent. "Could I just have one little bite?" She begged. "No Dawn. You know it will land right on my floor." Aunt Maddie replied. Dawn's mother came down the stairs with her teenage daughter Rose. "Dawn, get back upstairs." Rose sighed.
-
"What's the news?" Aurora asked as she sat down. Marigold the see through golden colored cat was sleeping on the toaster.
-
"Mari! Get off the toaster!" Rose sighed as Dawn listened in interest. "I think you need to make some real friends. And that it will be better for your future if... If I send you to a public high school." Aunt Maddie replied.
-
"What?! You can't send me to one of those, they sound so boring, and besides, I have real friends." said Aurora. Marigold got off the toaster and went back to sleep right next to it.
-
"Yes... But wouldn't it be nice to make friends with people who can eat, feel, and... Let's see... Leave the house?" Aunt Maddie asked. "And perhaps a boyfriend?" Rose teased. "Ew! Who needs one of those!" Dawn whined. "Don't knock it till you've tried it sis!" Rose laughed. "Rose!" Their mom snapped, sending Rose back to the attic.
-
"But I don't need to leave the house, I'm happy right here!" said Aurora.
-
"What about when you grow up? What will you do for a job?" Aunt Maddie asked.
-
Aurora shrugged, "Maybe an artist or musician, either way I can be at home and even when I have to leave I can always come back."
-
"I think it will be good for you to go to high school as practice then." Aunt Maddie told her.
-
"Practice for what?" Aurora asked.
-
"For when you grow. You will have to deal with the world at some time in your life." Her aunt sighed. Dawn flew around and looked out the window. "It's a bus!" Dawn cheered. "Yeah... this is last minute... Literally... but it's time to go!" Aunt Maddie told Aurora.
-
"Did you at least pack me a backpack full of school stuff?" Aurora asked now knowing that there was no getting out of this.
-
"Of course!" Madrid replied, handing Aurora her backpack and taking her out the door.
-
"Thanks I guess. Bye!" Aurora said as she boarded the bus.
-
Susan sat on the bus and, like all the others, looked out the window at the strange house.
