Thread Topic: The Official Guide to Roleplaying and Soaping
-
(Before reading this, please refer to This Thread, made by the lovely Dark22978. It may answer some questions that I don't!)
Question One: What is soaping, and how is it different from roleplaying?
Answer: Soaping and roleplaying are similar, though they're not really the same thing. While soaping consists of paragraphs in normal literature form, roleplaying normally consists of a character's name, their dialogue, and their actions only. (There's some exceptions, we'll get to that later!) Both, however, normally require two or more users and two or more characters.
Example's of soaping
-Exert from Mia and I's roleplay-
My post:
Matthew couldn't hold back a laugh as he heard yelling from a few rooms down. "Is that him, then?" Richard sighed, and nodded. "You should go try to convince him to stay. You're good with that kind of thing.." It was more or less a compliment, and it made Matthew blush, but he nodded, and slipped into the room the yelling was coming from, telling the nurse that he would take care of it. The poor women thanked him, and left.
The brunet settled him self in one of the chairs, crossing his legs. He sighed, glancing the boy up and down. He couldn't have been more than seventeen, he decided.
"If I bought you a teddy bear, would you calm down at stop yelling? You're upsetting the staff," He started, unable to hid the smile that crept onto his lips. "But, maybe you want one of the dinosaurs?"
Mia's response post:
Andrew wrinkled his nose as someone else came in. They weren't dressed in scrubs, like the nurses or doctors, but rather in normal clothes. He quickly decided it must be a psychologist, or someone else who would supposedly be able to calm him down.
"How about you buy me a taxi ride back to my apartment? It's my right to go home if I want to, and my rights are being infringed upon. I swear, I'll sue."
...It goes on and on, one person playing one or more characters, until you reach a conclusion!
Examples of Roleplaying

...Roleplaying can go on as long as you want it to, too. And, it can even continue in a new thread, with new characters and problems!
Question Two: I've never heard the term 'soaping' before. Why?
Answer: Soaping is a term unique to GTQ alone! I believe we started using it after This thread was made. It's the grandfather of all soaps, and probably the longest soap ever made.
Question Three: I tried to join a soap, and I was asked to leave. Why?
Answer: Often times, people come into the stage to soap with their friends. If this is so, they'll normally have said friend's name in the title or sub-title. (Pay attention to these, they might have important information! We'll get into that later, though.) It's always good to check that, and their post, before posting. If it seems like they already have a partner, it's best to leave it be.
Another reason may be that you're new to GTQ! Don't worry, there's no harm in that- We were all new once. But, people can be picky about who they soap with. It's alright, you'll get your chance!
Question Four: What do all the labels in the title and subtitle mean?
Answer: Normally, the labels in the title and subtitle are describing the soap that is to take place inside. Here's a little key for you!
Example Titel: World of Madness [1x1]
World of Madness is, of course, the title of the soap! Just like the title of any book you'll read, it gives yo an idea of what the soap will be about before you actually read it.
[1x1] refers to the number of people in the soap. The first number is the maker of the soap, the second how many soaping partners they're looking for. In this case, they're only looking for one.
Example Title#2 World of Madness [Group Soap: 1x4+] [Action, Adventure, Fantasy] [Experienced Soapers, Only]
Again, World of Madness is the title.
Just as [1x1] Displayed that the maker of the thread was only looking for one partner, the labels [Group Soap] and [1x4+] display how many people they're looking for- At least four, and maybe more!
The labels [Action, Adventure, Fantasy] shows what genre the soap will be, just like the genre of a book. Not everyone uses these, so don't expect to always see them.
[Experienced Soapers] It's something you'll see often, and please, pay attention to it! Again, people are picky about who they soap with. They probably want people who know what they're doing. So, if you've only soaped once or twice, it's probably not your place. Don't worry, you'll get there!
Question Five Do you have to have a plot?
Answer No! Some soaps are freestyled, and that's perfectly fine.
