He frowned, glancing up at her, then the locker number. "Oh..Sorry. I thought it was mine. I guess not." He ran a hand through his hair, trying to act nervous. "I'm new. My old school didn't have lockers, so...I'm sorry."
-
"It's fine." She said, still a bit snappily. "Where's your locker?" She almost added I'll help you get it open if you can find it, but didn't. She didn't have time to help some shy new kid. She needed to get to class.
-
"See, that's the problem. I don't know." He sighed, shaking his head. "I'll go to the office and ask. Thanks anyways, .." He paused, before finishing, "I, uh, don't know your name. I'm Camden. You are?"
-
"Oh. Well, have fun with that." She gave him a pointed glare-- he was still standing directly in front of her locker-- and then raked her eyes over him, unable to get over the uncanny resemblance he bore to the kid on the plane. "Star."
-
"I'll try." He smiled kindly, holding out a hand. "That's a lovely name, Star. Can you point me towards the office?"
-
He was still blocking her locker. With an inward sigh, she took his hand and shook it halfheartedly. "Thank you. It's down that hall, " she gestured with her other hand, "Third door on the left."
-
Camden finally moved out of her way, dropping her hand, and heading the way she had told him. He had known where the office was, and had only needed another reason to stick around a bit longer. "Thanks!" He called back over his shoulder.
-
She practically tackled the locker, doing the combination quickly and giving him a brisk wave in response without looking up. Grabbing what she needed, she closed her locker.
-
He turned down the hall, but didn't bother going to the office. Instead, he looped back around, going down the other side of the hall to his locker, easily opening it, and placing the things he wouldn't need in it. He hadn't been to any classes yet, so he didn't have any books.
-
She headed to her first class-- math. She wasn't very math smart, but she did well in the class. Well enough, anyways. She was pretty good at all her subjects. Not exceptional, but she always kept up and got pretty good grades.
-
When the bell rang, Camden hurried into the first class that he had with Star. He talked to the teacher for a minute, before silently slipping into a seat in the back. Camden immediately focused his eyes on Star.
-
Star skidded in with seconds to spare, sliding into the seat she always sat in. It was in the middle, not conspicuous in the least. And yet she felt eyes on her as she sat. Shifting uncomfortably, she grabbed her books and placed them on the desk in front of her.
-
Camden watched her, a small smile twitching at the edge of his lips. He knew that he was being overcautious. The killer, the one who had killed the other crash survivors, wouldn't attempt it in such a public place. But still, Camden wanted to be sure. He wouldn't take the risk.
-
Star zoned out halfway through the class, doodling on the sheet of notebook paper she should have been using to write out notes. Drawing was the way she escaped; the way she expressed herself. The doodles turned into sketches. The sketches turned into a pair of eyes, which was then framed by hair and a face was formed around it.
She didn't know what she had drawn until she stopped, pulling her hand back. Star's brow furrowed. She had captured Cam. With a frown, she quickly crumpled the paper and waited for the end of class. -
