I walk through my house without a word, getting ready for the reaping. My mother sits quietly next to the fire while my father helps me find our only pair of nice shoes.
When I'm finally ready I walk over to my mother and give her a kiss on her forehead, before walking over to my father. He gives me a nod before patting my shoulder and letting me leave. I know that they are going to be a few minutes behind me because he has to get my mother sane enough to get off the couch.
Every year on the day of the reaping, my mother goes into a trance like state in fear of losing yet another person in her family. Her younger brother got called, he would have been my uncle, yet he isn't here today. Also her name did get pulled one year but someone gratefully grabbed her spot. -
