Atheists in Israel and Gaza continue to bomb the crap out of each other. Oh wait, I'm being told by our producers that those people are actually Jews, Muslims, and Christians, and that no war ever has been strted by atheists. In other news, we go live to Maine for more on a renegade moose in one family's backyard. Here's Tom s---tenbrick...
-
Wars have been started by atheists, just for the sake of atheism. I think either all or most were for the sake of communism.
-
I meant just not for the sake of atheism, goddammit I hate when I forget a word....
-
The closest we've come to a war NOT started by religion was the cold war. And both sides were too logical to actually start it. They quit for the sake of humanity. Can't say the same about religion though.
-
Religion is not always the cause of war though. Greed, power, and land are the main reasons, whether started by a theist or an atheist. People can be cruel.
-
No war is ever caused by just one source. But religion has played a major part in every major war ever.
-
True, true.
-
"Greed, power, and land are the main reasons"
and then you agreed with me when I said that religion played a major part in every war, EVER.
What side are you playing at? -
To be honest, no idea anymore.
-
I can see that.

Like, all the people that I know who are atheists in real life, they don't make sense, at all. They don't have any of their facts straight and they never do anything to back themselves up. They just act like dicks.
Then I come on here and I meet you and a few other atheists who ACTUALLY MAKE f---ING SENSE. I have always loved science and history, so I figured since I know a lot about it and still believe in God then he obviously must be real.
But then you guys started talking about current times, and my brain is just like, "Oh s---, I'm f---ing blown away." Outside of my computer and a few websites, I don't live in the modern world, and I don't care to because it seems f---ed up to me.
And it's like, I can actually see it clearly now. Like, I understand now.
But I feel like if I actually say, "Hey, I no longer believe in God," I'd be letting down my entire family. So of course I have to defend this religion I don't really believe to much in because of my family, right? -
wrong. I can sympathize with having to choose between being honest with yourself, and appeasing family.
I actually went to a private Catholic school for years and attended church weekly. Both of my parents were devote Christians as well as my grandmother who was my biggest role model as a child.
I know it's hard to take that first step, and if you honestly don't think you're ready to tell them, by all means, keep it to yourself. I still get dragged to church on occasion because it makes them happy.
But don't lie to yourself for them. They wouldn't want that. Be honest with yourself, and when you're ready, be honest with them too.
Do you know what happened when I told my family I was an atheist? They were uncomfortable for a bit, but they understood and stopped pressuring me to be more Christian. They may not have understood, but they were willing to try. They were willing to compromise. -
But I'm an altar sever. I'm supposed to be a religious role model in my community. I've always gone to a Catholic school. I can't just suddenly tell my family (and basically half a city, seeing as how I'm from a prominent Catholic area) that I don't believe in God anymore. I'd be shunned.
-
May I suggest some of the atheists I role modeled when I first started to leave religion? People who explain things better than I ever could. People who can help you come to terms with things and help you with personal concerns you may have?
-
Yeah.
