Thread Topic: My rant (you all probably wont read it anyways)

I am tired of all of the religious idiocy I see degrading our human potential. Seriously, if all religion would dissapear we would all be so much better off. Religion is the cancer of humanity because it stops our progress with pathetic fears of logic and reasoning.
Look at it this way, religion is trying to put rules and stipulations on every thing we do. Almost everything that a religious community doesnt approve of has "consequences". This reminds me alot of the people who were against making the HPV vaccine routine. Even though it would undoubtable prevent alot of cervical cancer and save womens lives. The idea is that if sex is more dangerous and has more consequences, then the religion would have more power to control it. I highly doubt that the people against this vaccine were against vaccines. More along the lines of against their consequences being taken away.
Also, if you look back on history, billions of lives could have been saved, technology could have evolved further ahead than it has, and society would be a much better place if religion didnt restrict us. Because of the countless crusades and holy wars humanity has had our population has been dessimated dozens of times over. Also, due to religious influence in the 12th century, science was outlawed for nearly 300 years. There is a reason we refer to this as the dark ages. Humanity was drastically hurt in our mental progress because of our religious paranoia. And science is the only belief system out there that is willing to admit it may not be correct, but it is also the only belief system out there confident enough to go out and find proof to support itself.
lastly, the belief in a divine being who has never been seen, never been heard, never been proven, and only exists on a plane above our own, is no different than saying that there isnt one at all. Science has a proven answer for everything that religion falls back on miracles for. And if we try to help understand your 'god' and prove his existance you contradict every physically provable resource we have with your own special rule as to why it wont work. Making it impossible to disprove an idea is not the same as proving it is right.
I dont even know why i try arguing with religion any more. I guess I feel that there's still hope for you all. Religion is already dying, 65% of the population is religious. That's a massive difference compared to 300 years ago when it was 99%. Please aid the progress of humanity and abandon the shackles that each person has bound themselves in. With your help we could hopefully his a comfortable 0% within the next 150-200 years! -
I'm with ya, dude

I do not agree...
I totally agree! -
I will disagree anyway. Ignore me if you will, but it IS a debatable issue.
On the use of science- Firstly, I believe in God, but I'm not completely against science.
While there are some things you could say I'm "morally against," this is simply because I believe it's for our own good.
Without further developments in science, the "holy wars" you see as so pointless wouldn't have had such a devastating effect on population, as weapons would not be as advanced.
On existence- There have been many things long thought to be myth that have been proven real. Take the giant squid for example. Everyone believed it was simply an old Greek hero tale (Heracles faced a giant squid in his trials) until they discovered it.
You'll probably counteract this saying "But God isn't as tangible as a giant squid!" Not by the relatively puny resources on earth.
I'm not going to claim I know everything however. I probably missed something somewhere. Point it out, but I will probably have an argument.
(And if there is a typo in this, that will ruin the whole thing, won't it...) -
i agree with The Prophet
-
No Appayipyip42, you make very firm and reasonable points. I would love to debate this with you if you'd like.
The holy wars did use the advancements of science to fight their enemies, but who do you blame? The weapons or the weilders? The holy wars needed science, but science didnt need the holy wars.
Please look up the definition of Atheism, it simply states that it is a person who, "Does not believe in a theistic god." And until you can prove to me that a God exists, like the giant squid, I will continue to see it as a myth and legend. A cute fairy tale. -
I agree all the way with the prophet.
-
Maybe I don't have the resources to prove God exists, but so far I haven't seen anything that proves he doesn't exist.
-
I personally think that there are some good things about believing in God, like someone people get faith and hope believing that someone is watching over them and that someone will always love them. And it's not religion itself hurting the people, it's the followers who take their own religion too far.
But, yeah, I overall agree with you. -
tazia101 NoviceCool argument. I mean, it's totally offensive to some, but you know what? He has a point. Like, a lot (NOT generalizing) of christian churches and other religions too, are using religion as an exuse to fight, to kill, and to hate.
Wars have been fought over religion. Many wars. There have been massacres. Sacrifices. Suicides. Bombings. People use it as an exuse to hate people who are of different religions. Being Catholic is the top rated answer to "Why are you homophobic?"
I get it. You want to feel like you're not alone. You want to feel like you have the answers to everything. A god answers every question we have.
but we do need to move o sometime. Answers are being found. There are still questions, but we WILL find the answers. We don't need the invisible person helping us.
You know what I think? I think whatever the universe is, what ever the big secret is, we can give up. Our sense of size, our brains, our development, we will never evolve enough to understand it. Whatever theories we come up with, I know they will be wrong because humans came up with them.
There are politer ways to say everything, and if I had time, I'd read this over to make sure it's non-offensive, but I have to go. Hope I didn't sound too bad. -
You didn't sound bad. That was simply showing your opinion. (Sounding bad is "AGREE MOTHAf---A OR TA DEVULZ WILL NOM YOU FOR EETURNATYZ!!!!1)
I would never say science/technology is a *bad* thing. After all I AM using it to type this message.
But I do believe a higher power set things up so that people had the capability to do such things. -
I agree....
-
Agrees with tazia.
