Just come back from History class, ey?
Are you forgetting the part where Paul (the writer of Ephesians) explicitly states that everyone is equal under God and under each other? Twice?
(There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3: 28)
(1 Corinthians 12:13)
Or the part where the same Paul encourages slaves to free themselves from their masters? (1 Corinthians 21-24)
Or are you forgetting the historical context of Ephesians, where Paul is writing predominately to slaves trapped in Ephesus, in a time when slaves were killed and maimed for disobeying their masters?
And are you forgetting that in literally the next line, Paul urges slave owners to treat their slaves kindly?
I think you are. And I think you're kind of missing the entire point of Ephesians, which is how to live a pure, good life despite hardships and how everyone is equal in the eyes of the Lord?
Maybe instead of just cheery picking Bible verses you should actually read the Bible to find their context first.
Besides, it was all written by Paul anyway. Arguably you don't even need it. -
^ except the last line because in some regards you do
-
Who in the hell is Paul?
-
The writer of Ephesians. Didn't you read what I said? Hell, Paul wrote at least seven books of the bible, with another seven still being credited to him.
To put it more simply, Paul wrote a chunk of the New Testament. He wrote Romans, both Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, both Thessalonians, both Timothys, Titus and Philemons. As you can see, he wrote quite a lot.
No offense, but don't you find it a little shallow to take a quote from a man you don't even know, out of context, and attempt to condemn his entire body of work? -
You just noticed? That's one of the many reasons people dislike it.
-
Keno Joyous NewbieI heard that Paul has an aggressive form of the disease known as 'Contradictus Hypocriatus'.
Because IHLAOY, you've just agreed that Paul did, in fact, support slavery. Well, once upon a time at-least. I'll admit my opinion doesn't count for much seeing as I've never even read a full bible, although how you accepted 1714's quote tells me a few things.
I'll leave. -
You have to see that he wasn't supporting slavery. Its the same situation in a child-parent situation. Now, are you trying to say that a parent should not, in any way, be able to tell their OWN CHILD what to do?
-
Of course I accepted 1714's quote, it's a real quote. I just think that taking a quote out of context and using it to claim things that aren't true is dishonest and makes no sense. Would you call me a racist just because I once used the word n-----?
Paul is writing to slaves. In that entire verse, he is addressing slaves. In that verse, he is giving them advice and guidance on how to follow Christ in a culture where slaves were maimed or killed for following their beliefs.
In other chapters he stresses that everyone is equal, and that slaves should escape if possible, but in that one verse, for that one line, he is suggesting that slaves worship in secret to protect themselves until they can become free. Taken out of context and ignoring literally everything else that Paul wrote, yes, it does look like he supports slavery.
And f--- you, Zero, who posts in a thread without reading it first? -
"Slaves obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them as you would serve Christ." I'll admit, the lack of a comma is confusing, not reading the next post.
-
(Why the Hell do I always need to add another post?!)
And eh, you make a good point in your first paragraph.
