pityforsociety NewbieI'd find it unlikely that you'd be the only Christian on here, considering how major Christianity is. But then again, this is the internet... where fundamentalist atheists rule...
And I probably know why some people read the Bible and then become atheists. Many of the new atheists treat the Bible as just one book and not a collection of books, thus interpreting everything the same way and not in light of writing styles or in connection with the other books. Many also take the whole Bible word-for-word literally, which just shows that they don't know how to read such things in context. That's the main reason for the new atheists that is so different than classical atheism. New atheism is intellectually a vegetable, really. It makes me disappointed. -
(Whilst you have no issue assuming that an entire other group of people are mentally vegetables and acting smug about it, I'm at least going to give a reason for the things I'm about to say. It's late, I'm tired, and your words are oxymoronic.)
Where shall I begin...
Let's start with your opening paragraph, shall we?
"Fundamentalist atheists"
By definition, Fundamentalism is the demand for a strict adherence to orthodox theological doctrines. Orthodox being what is traditionally viewed as right or true and theological being the study of the nature of God and religious beliefs.
So your "fundamentalist" translates to "the demand for strict adherence to the traditionally viewed as right study of the nature of God and religious beliefs." and "atheist" which is simply "lack of belief in a theistic God."
So your "fundamentalist atheist" is someone who strictly adheres to the right study of the belief of the lack of belief in the nature of a not-god?
Forgive me if it sounds like you're repeating what someone else has told you and accepting it as the truth without figuring out what it means for yourself. I understand that's a bad habit among the religious.
Your second paragraph is so full of inconsistencies that it honestly was painful to read.
First off, I would like for you to tell me exactly what you mean by:
-"New Atheists"
-"in light of writing styles"
-"how to read such things in context"
-"classical atheism"
For now, I'm just going to examine your statement with the assumed definition of these words I'm getting.
"Many of the [requires citing] treat the bible as just one book and not a collection of books."
On the contrary, almost every atheist is fully aware that the bible is a collection of books. The fact that it was written by countless individuals only aids to the understanding that it is inconsistent and therefor not trust-able as the supreme word of a God figure.
As for the interpretation, I feel I have to disagree with you. The definition of interpretation is how one explains the meaning of something. Unless you'd like to explain to me why the moral code set forth by a supreme being is open to interpretation, I would make the argument that the only interpretation of it should be the literal one as a whole and without bias, literary gaps or human revision. That book however, doesn't exist.
So while you sit there and call others "intellectually a vegetable" I would happily point out that you are the pot calling the kettle black. Your bronze aged beliefs lost potency when humanity started figuring things out for themselves. We don't need a comfort blanket for the scary things out there anymore. Keep your god. I'll take an ugly truth over a pretty lie any day. -

A user named Macooo still shows up from time to time. They are Muslim, but they only come here to post long pieces about their faith and then leave. They passively ignore conversation and any feedback beyond "thank you".
