What exactly is the purpose of Christmas? I mean, celebrating the birth of Christ? Or was it his resurrection, always get confused...
Anyway what I am wondering is that Christmas is a Christian based holiday so why is it a public holiday world wide? Because it is the most popular religion or something? -
Most popular i thought

You say
"Most popular, I think" not thought... just saying -

Christmas is the celebration of Christ's birth.
Easter is the celebration of Christ's ressurection.
But I have been hearing things about Christmas truly celebrating Christ's death, as it is Christ + Mas and apparently mas means death.
I have been wondering this too. Non-religious people celebrate this and listen to Christmas music, which most is about Jesus. I mean, even the name "Christ". -
Christmas was first a Pagan holiday called Yule, but I think Romans called it Saturnalia. Pagans would bring in a Yule log and burn it for I think 12 days. If there were a lot of sparks, then it would be a good season for crops and cattle. They would also bring in evergreen trees to keep out the evil spirits and to keep illnesses away. And then Christianity came and wanted to convert people to their religion, so they changed the name to Christmas. Even though Jesus wasn't born on that day because there were shepherds, so he was most likely born in the spring.
