How would we come up with the idea that there's some higher power? And how would humans have come of with religions vaguely similar to each other? How could Native Americans come up with the idea that there were some higher beings that created us, while across the Atlantic, the Greeks assumed the same thing? It seems like if there was some medicine man or something like that who told them, they'd decide he was crazy and just kick him out or something.
I probably sound like an idiot... but thank you for reading this. -

At one time all people worshiped some sort of deity along with other religious things so that their life wasn't completely meaningless and unexplainable.

Religion came about when people did not know how to explain certain things like how we were created and what happens when we die.
So they began to think of ways to atleast cover this up so thats where the deities come in.
Lets imagine someone in North America made up a God. Everyone is happy and everything is covered up, and then a travelling merchant from Greece, me, comes along and learns of this new system. My imagination grows, I make up Gods of Thunder, Gods of Light, Gods of War,etc.
I go back to Greece and introduce this idea. Now we have our own system.
Now a travelling merchant from Asia visits Europe and happens to be in Greece. This new system he learns of gives him his own ideas which he introduces back to his people, and so on and so forth.
So thats how religion came about.
Thats my hypothesis anyway -
A traveling merchant from Greece couldn't end up in America. America wasn't discovered until Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. And China was pretty closed off from everybody because of the Great Wall.

Have the Vikings been all but forgotten? Scandinavians were in North America before Christopher Columbus was a come stain on his mommy's panties.

@Hikaru True, but there is evidence that both the Native American and Viking cultures had religion before then.
