Why do we all Collectively call groups of friends who we aren't part of Cliques? It's interesting to me. I do it too, and sometimes I agree. I'm just curious as to where it started
P.S I'm doing this in anon because I don't want any older users to come at me. -
This morning, I ended up Googling the definition of clique since I was curious to see what it truly means. I've used it all my life without really knowing.
Per Google, it is defined as:
a small group of people, with shared interests or other features in common, who spend time together and do not readily allow others to join them.
Most friendships are built on shared interests. Friend groups would naturally have some form of common ground as well. Whether or not the group is "small" depends on various factors.
It seems that the only negative factor of a clique is the indication that those groups "do not readily allow others to join." But... is that really the case? Is there much indication that people on this site refuse to talk to others outside for their close friends? Or is it more so that the people who are quick to call groups a clique are either jealous and/or angry with certain members of the group? Perhaps they don't have anything in common with those people at all, and their frustration at not sharing common interests makes them quick to blame others for their lack of friendships. -
I hit submit without finishing my thought. SOS
When it comes to this site especially, I think a lot of users forget that we have been airing our grievances publicly... Some of us for years. And whether or not we want them to, people will form opinions of us based on what we have said or done.
With older users especially, we have years worth of experience with each other or mutuals. So I guess it's natural for people to consider certain groups of older users cliques, simply because we don't take into account how much time has passed for us to form opinions of each other and either build or destroy relationships.
