I saw some people mention that 16 personalities isn't accurate. I wanted to expand on that for people who may not understand why exactly 16 personalities isn't considered a refutable source.
I'm going to do a deep dive but if you'd like a TL;DR then go to the bottom of this post to just get the base level of information.
____
The Meyer-Briggs test is based off of Jungian psychology.
Carl Jung is the father of the cognitive functions, concept that gave birth to the MBTI theory and other typologies like Socio- nics.
Jung created his own concepts with its own meaning and definitions inside of these theories of Personality.
Jung believes that, by using these concepts, one starts an interior journey, returning from the dark to bring back to consciousness the projections and shadow components of the unconscious.
The goal is to create a harmony between our inner and outer reality. Concepts like introversion, psyche or intuition don't mean the same in Jung's than in other typologies, theories, or in modern psychology.
The cognitive functions theory takes place on the ego, which is operated by the dominant function. The inferior function, according to Jung, is stuck in the unconscious. The middle functions are a bridge between the conscious and the unconscious, being at service of the dominant, while trying to make the inferior function conscious.
The compensatory balance between the conscious and the unconscious thus, between the dominant and the inferior function is what creates things like "complexes".

Hey mint! Where'd you steal all these photos from?
I am using the infographics from indepth MBTI's Instagram. Lord only knows I could never explain all this information as digestively as that have so I wanted to use them as a primary source.

TL;DR
okay so where does all that information lead us? It leads us to function stacks function stacks are what creates each type and it is what motivates us. Everyone uses all eight functions but Meyer-Briggs only uses four. It is one of the primary criticisms of their work.
here's the basics of MBTI, from type to function stacks
If 16personalities isn't accurate, what is?
Online tests are not a reliable way to type yourself. Most tests fail to identify your cognitive functions as they attempt to give you a letter type instead. Cognitive functions are complicated and may take awhile for you to recognize in yourself, but a lot of rewarding self work can be done by deep diving into it.
If you do want to take an online test ,keys2cognition is widely considered to be one of the gold standards in typology quizzes. It is always recommended that you at least gain a cursory understanding of the theory outside taking quizzes, but I get that not everyone has the time to ponder their anima. Sometimes 15 minute test is all the time you have to dedicate, and that's totally okay.
Once you feel as though you've been accurately typed, the information about types on 16personalities is actually a pretty decent intro to start learning more about yourself, as long as you understand that it is making generalizations and may not be applicable to every person. Trauma can also affect your typology so it's worthwhile to take everything 16p says with a grain of salt.
I definitely recommend checking out indepthmbti's IG if you decide you're interested in learning more nuanced and information on typology.
someone told me that MBTI is like astrology and isnt accurate, is that true?
This is an oversimplification of very specific critiques over Meyers & Briggs original work. Many scholars now prefer a modified version of typology that is more nuanced and there are critiques of the personal lives of Meyers & Briggs, but that does not mean the theory as a whole has been debunked as pseudoscience.
It is still a very useful theory that is based on literature that is still used by clinicians regularly, there are just a lot of people who only know about 16personalities and either vaguely understand the critiques behind it, or repeat misinformation about the theory as gospel and post that misinformation online for others to repeat.
thank you from the bottom of my heart if you made it through all that!
That's all I have for now but I might update this thread from time to time with more research and information as I find it. I am not a psychologist, I'm just a huge nerd. Please do your own research if you want to learn more about this and don't hesitate to let me know if anything I said is inaccurate.
If you made it to the bottom of this thread, please let me know what you think your dominant function is! -
Y'all, somehow I proofread all that and forgot to add the slide that actually showed what the functions actually represented 💀
Here's that slide, the only slide that really ever mattered to begin with.
