  I can't exactly will myself to be happy. So what of I'm rather bitter? I'm not hurting anyone.

  We want to see you happy because we care about you. It makes people sad to see people they love sad.

  Actually, recent research into physiology have shown that thinking yourself to be happy actually does work in making you happy. It really is a situation of being positive and happy despite what happens which results you feeling happy. Not to mention it even makes you happier, longer.
