I’ve seen a bunch of stuff on YouTube about this artist, who has “appropriated” black culture. She’s white, and wears dreadlocks, which a lot of people say is cultural appropriation. People are going as far to say that dream catchers are cultural appropriation.
I don’t think today’s definition of cultural appropriation exists. Cultures are meant to be shared, not gatekeeped. Saying a white woman can’t wear dreadlocks is like saying a black woman can’t wear her hair down. What people say is cultural appropriation today is just being racist to people who want to embrace African, Indian, and Indigenous culture. You can’t gatekeep music and hairstyles. I’m not a poc, but that’s my opinion on the issue. If someone were to gatekeep a “white” hairstyle and say a black person can’t wear their hair like that it’d be racist. The double standards are very clear -
This artist is Shanin Blake, by the way. She has this kinda hippie style which I think has nothing to do with black culture, but what are your guys opinions?
-
Also languages. She uses Hawaiian phrases in some of her songs. You can’t gate keep a language

I think all of that is fine unless she's going 'too far' by stealing culture, like if a white person celebrating indigenous people started wearing feathers all the time. That's inappropriate because (from what I've heard, if I'm wrong I'm wrong) feathers symbolized bravery, and only some of the toughest people/important people got to wear those, so it'd be weird if you did it.
Also I don't feel like using the argument "if a white person did this to you" really holds water because white people invented racism, y'know? I get what you're trying to say tho lmao
Idk my thoughts are that some parts of culture shouldn't be gatekept but also that culture is a very personal thing, and that there's a line and you shouldn't cross it -
Fair enough. From what I’ve seen she hasn’t gone “too far”, but anyone correct me if I’m wrong.
-
1. That's really weird, being that mad over hair
2. Dreamcatchers being cultural appropriation is also kind of weird because isn't that just something like 6 year old girls get as gifts or as just decor stuff
3. How does one gatekeep a whole f---ing LANGUAGE -
The line exists! I will say that, there is a line. The problem is, where do we draw it? How far do we allow and where do we stop? I find it hard to think that it's an objective thing, and more subjective, as many things in life are.

I agree. Racism is a very messy topic to debate tho, especially when you’re not a poc. I think we should all strive for equality. You can’t dismiss when white people are being racist, but in this society some people will dismiss when poc are being racist because “white people created racism” (again, more white people are racist than poc, but it does happen). I think it’s the double standards in a lot of things that is the reason people are treated unequally in society. I don’t think what Shanin Blake has done is cultural appropriation. She’s embraced all sorts of cultures and, from what I’ve seen, hasn’t said or done anything offensive. She more has a style of fairy core than any cultures. But again I might be wrong

Well firstly, I'm pretty sure certain POC hairstyles will typically damage your hair unless you're black because their hair is thicker than ours, but whatever I guess.
secondly, GL1TT3RGLU3, please educate yourself on the history of dreamcatchers and their importance to the Indigenous people. They have been misused and over-commercialized in the past 50 years or so, which is probably why you think that "it's just a gift for 6-year-olds", but they do have actual meaning. -
@Gacha_Summer, it definitely can damage your hair, but not if taken care of and installed correctly :]

to get money, you need a degree in school. to get a degree in school, you need lots of money, but you cant get that degree because you have no money and your getting it to get money but if you have no degree you cant get sufficient funds to go to school.
