The Australian Government of Education has recently allowed AI to be used in classrooms. Not a lot of you are Aussies, but I'd love to hear what you think about AI (ChatGPT, etc.) being used in schools.
-
Eh, I wouldn't mind it depending on the AI. Dunno how I feel about ChatGPT.
-
I mean it depends on how it's being used, if for educational purposes only then yes, if for exploitation of the school system then no. I don't have enough info on the topic atm so I can only make an educated guess for now
-
Both very good points.
-
eh, depends on the context

I think a bigger question is how would you even regulate AI usage? This is not a question I expect us to be able to answer as it has large global implications and it's something I think a lot of legislators are still working through right now.
In local schools of course you could have blockers on ai sites and they absolutely should have them blocked on school laptops, but you can hardly block kids from using their cellphones.
My mom works as a teachers aid and we were talking about this last night. What I find incredibly curious is there's still a lot of kids who are doing bad in school because they can't even take the initiative to make an ai generated essay or scan their math problems.
That is extremely concerning to me because it demonstrates that a lot of the problems we are seeing in education have nothing to do with kids being stupid, they literally just don't care to show up for themselves. It strikes me as a huge mental health issue and I really hope we can get a better support structure in place for kids.
My mom and I both feel like having more teachers aids would help a lot with not only taking a huge load off of teachers, but helping with classroom management and getting kids more one on one time and extra help. -
Since AI is basically taking over the world already, there is potential that AI can be used in school, but there has to be awareness about the different ways that it is used.
AI could be effectively used to monitor certain aspects of student progress and identify areas where more support might be required for them to fully succeed.
But, as always, sometimes things might not go right with AI. It also could be used to take advantage of the education system, and unfairly give other students advantages over the others.
So if you have to allow AI at schools, then so be it. But you'll have to know that sometimes there might be issues with it, and you'll have to be ready to take action if something does happen. -
Omg what are the odds! Biden signed an executive order around AI today.
a summary of the executive order as quoted from ground news

The Commerce Department will create guidance for authenticating and labeling Al- generated content.
Develop principles and best practices to mitigate the harms and maximize the benefits of Al for workers by addressing job displacement; labor standards; workplace equity, health, and safety; and data collection.
Produce a report on Als potential labor-market impacts, and study and identify options for strengthening federal support for workers facing labor disruptions, including from Al.
Catalyze Al research across the United States through a pilot of the National Al Research Resource--a tool that will provide Al researchers and students access to key Al resources and data-and expanded grants for Al research in vital areas like healthcare and climate change.
Streamline visa criteria and interviews to attract highly skilled immigrants and nonimmigrants with expertise in Al-related fields to study, work, and stay in the U.S.
Provide clear guidance to landlords, Federal benefits programs, and federal contractors to keep Al algorithms from being used to exacerbate discrimination.
Address algorithmic discrimination through training, technical assistance, and coordination between the Department of Justice and Federal civil rights offices on best practices for investigating and prosecuting civil rights violations related to Al.
Ensure fairness throughout the criminal justice system by developing best practices on the use of Al in sentencing, parole and probation, pretrial release and detention, risk assessments, surveillance, crime forecasting and predictive policing, and forensic analysis.
Advance the responsible use of Al in healthcare, including the development of affordable and life- saving drugs.
The Department of Health and Human Services will establish a safety program to report unsafe healthcare practices involving Al.
Shape Al's potential to transform education by creating resources to support educators deploying Al-enabled educational tools, such as personalized tutoring in schools.
Call on Congress to pass bipartisan data privacy legislation to protect all Americans, especially kids.
Prioritize support for accelerating the development and use of privacy-preserving techniques.
Establish a Research Coordination Network to advance rapid breakthroughs and development in privacy-preserving research and technologies.
Evaluate how agencies collect and use commercially available information-including information they procure from data brokers-and strengthen privacy guidance for federal agencies.
Expand bilateral, multilateral, and multi stakeholder engagements to collaborate on The State Department, in collaboration, with the Commerce Department will lead an effort to establish robust international frameworks for harnessing Al's benefits and managing its risks and ensuring safety.
Accelerate development and implementation of vital Al standards with international partners and in standards organizations, ensuring that the technology is safe, secure, trustworthy, and interoperable.
Promote the safe, responsible, and rights- affirming development and deployment of Al abroad to solve global challenges, such as advancing sustainable development and mitigating dangers to critical infrastructure.
The White House will appoint an Al council to oversee the order's goals. The council will be lead by Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed.
