Thread Topic: What are we protesting for?
-
The school walkout. Thousands of kids everywhere walked out of their schools for 17 minutes to honor the victims of parkland. Many of them held signs that stated guns should be banned.
Let's think about this for a minute.
We're wanting to ban guns because they hurt people. If that's what we're doing, then why don't we just ban knives? Mace? Anything that can be used as a weapon? It doesn't truly make sense. Restricting the age or tract records isn't going to do anything. Anyone could simply buy a gun for the other person, if they meet the right requirements. So what exactly are we trying to accomplish here?
In my opinion, I don't think we should take away guns. I think we should add them. Not in that way, but it a separate way.
I believe every teacher should be trained professionally in the ways of self defense and handling a gun. Teachers should not be required to have a gun hidden within their classroom. Teachers should be able to volunteer as to whether or not they would like to handle a gun within their classroom, for that could lead to big risks.
That's what I believe can be a large step into limiting gun violence without out thoroughly banning guns.
You have to know what you're protesting for before you actually do it.
Thank you for your time. -

I agree. As Trump said the people who do these types of things are cowards. If teachers had the means of defending themselves then I doubt there would be any school shootings. -
I agree completely. However, they should not just give a gun to any trained teacher. Some people are psychos. Some teachers should be given a weapon, but others might aim it at a student.

Right, so what could we do to prevent this? We could place security cameras in the teacher's classrooms, and have someone watching them 24/7. -
True, but the best thing to do is give teachers police training or special training for if a shooting does happen . Or some schools have security, we could arm them.

If anyone in Canada we're allowed to just buy a gun whenever they wanted... I would be dead. I annoy a lot of people and I would never feel safe leaving the house if I knew that just anyone could have a gun.
And if some of the teachers I knew had guns... Yeah... I'd be dead. I know a lot of teachers in mainstream classes who would use the gun to demand respect. I know a lot of teachers in the Autism Program who would attempt to use the gun to get their students 'under control'...
Using a gun for hunting, self defence in a dangerous feild, or under strict rules, Fine. But if anyone was allowed to get a gun, or just handing out guns to teachers... I would never feel safe. I don't feel very safe as it is. If teachers or random people in my life had guns I would need to be home schooled and never leave the house. I have very little trust in people. -
That's the thing
They wouldn't be just handing them out, they would need more training than cops.
My homeroom teacher talks on this subject alot and it's pretty interesting -

Then Perhaps we dont arm teachers with guns, and instead we teach them in hand to hand combat. If used correctly it would be very easy to disarm the shooter. -

Right, but a gun can be used long range, where as hand to hand combat has to be up close. -
You guys are talking about the wrong problem, you need to think about this as a longterm solution, yes arming and teaching teachers how to handle firearms would help for a little bit, but eventually the people who shoot up schools will find new ways to take care of these temporary obstacles and make the situation worse. So arming the teachers is not the problem, its the people behind these shootings, they are the problem, and helping them is the longterm solution, everyone is heated about guns being banned, but people don't realize that these guns are just tools, and yes they can kill people, but its just a tool, its useless without a trigger man. I saw someone on here say this, but people will do everything they can to hurt other people, almost everybody who shoots someplace up, has something going on in their life, they have some mental issue, and they take it out on everybody else because they are desperate for the attention. And so that is what needs to be fixed, not the gun laws, the only thing that needs to be fixed is that there has to be stricter requirements on acquiring firearms and weapons.
but thats just my opinion
and if you want to argue don't expect a response
because i want to be pretentious and believe that no one else but myself and people who agree with me are correct.
good night -
No you're definitely right there Connor. Lots of these kids... They just need help.

Again, it is a very valid point, but I highly doubt these people would check themselves in to a mental hospital, and I dont belive there is any way to find them without infringing on their rights. I realize he might not respond and will assume this is an argument, so if anyone else would like to respond its appreciated...
