We need to get past all this ideological bullcrap. Seriously. The world cannot be boiled down to man-made political talking points, be they liberal, conservative, socialist, communist, libertarian, fascist, or any other possible ideology. The truth can only be reached when we suspend our metanarratives. There are undeniable truths to be found in every line of political thought. I'm especially angered by the idea of people explaining the world and its events through a single ideological prism because I'm a student of history. It is my experience that there is way too much revisionism in the field of history right now, too many people picking and choosing evidence to support their worldview. Obviously this is dangerous to public discourse, but it also takes the piss out of history as a discipline. Doing historical research on something you've already decided the answer on takes all the mystery out of your research.
All academic stuff aside, adhering to a single "ism" is pointless and counterproductive. It is the exact same thing as following a religion, it is a simple answer to a complicated question. The best way to find truth is throw off ideological barriers and find truth yourself.
If you must know, I adhere most to socialism as an ideology. Frankly though, being a socialist in America is a futile effort. -
'Tis why I don't identify with a label, I feel tied down by it like I would a religion. I start thinking about how to be a better (insert label here) instead of what I really believe and think would be best.
Although I do like being able to identify with a label because I can easily convey what I believe and find people who agree. -
I prefer not to be labeled. Makes it too easy for people to argue with you if they make you out as a straw man for the other side.

Yep. Honestly those are the only reasons to use labels, to not have to list out everything when someone asks where you stand. Of course, that happens rarely, I'm generally presented with single issues.
Other problems with labels are if you're wrong. You have to make the final decision on what to call yourself, and if you're wrong it's incredibly humiliating- not to mention that you give the wrong impression, heck even if you are accurate in labeling yourself, some fringe issue will pop up and you won't agree with your chosen category's stance, but they'll think you do.
It's why I prefer to let my actions speak for me, better picture of what I actually stand for and they can't have prejudices based on the name.
