I don't mean to say politics is a waste of time. I mean to say that it is, in many ways, the art of bulls---. Many of the political ideologues you see on TV, as well as our elected representatives, rarely deviate from their common narrative. For example, conservative voices are devoted to the narrative that secular liberals and government socialism are destroying America. Libertarian voices stick to the government half of this formula and almost seem to advocate anarchy at times. The government does bad s---, our government especially, and a healthy suspicion of your government is a good thing. But arming yourself to the teeth to prepare for a tyrannical takeover that probably won't even come is hardly a healthy suspicion. This is a bit of a libertarian stereotype to be sure, but I have yet to meet a libertarian who doesn't own several guns and carry a gun with them wherever it is legal to do so. I like to think liberals are more realistic in their worldveiw than the right wing, but that isn't always the case, because they have to stick to their own narrative as well, which basically consists of playing up the inequality, corporate greed, and violence in our country. They're mostly right, but they still have to blur certain facts to stick to their narrative. One very good example: you can never accuse any poor person or welfare recipient of being a lazy, good-for-nothing leach, when it is clear that there are some people who clearly fit that bill. A truly comprehensive social welfare system, which includes access to quality health care and quality education would help a lot of people, yes, but the truth is that some people have no interest in being anything but poor.
What's my point here? Basically just take everything you hear with a grain of salt. -
Stereotypes are stupid. I am personally sick of political labels. I just want things to actually get done in Washington. I only wish that our representatives cared more about the people who elected them than staying elected.
