Alright well here it is then:
The Tunnel
During The Russian Revolution, Nicholai Shmitz had been saving up money so that his daughter could study abroad.
He was sitting in his study after a long day of hard work, counting all the coins he had.
Just a bit more, he'd murmur in his sleep, just a bit more money and she can get out of here.
Of course, he had to be careful, because even by saying the word, "Famine" he could get arrested and sentenced to 40 years in prison.
But all of them knew that they were only being fed lies, "Equality to all!" they'd say, killing the czar was the worst thing they'd ever done. But if you were smart enough and didn't complain over your soup, you just might get through.
One frosty cold morning, his wife, Odel Bauer, was cutting up the last of the moldy turnips and making it in to a tasteless stew... But they had to be thankful for every morsal they got, knowing that others weren't as lucky.
The knife she had used to cut up the vegetables was rusty and old, and she had to push down with all her might to get it to cut through, but today, she had gotten so fed up with it's uselessness that she flung it, and out the window it went, landing with a 'clang!' on to the snow covered pavement outside, she peered through the window, and couldn't find the knife, it was buried in the snow somewhere, but her temper had not yet ceased so she didn't care.
So when the inspector came round, he spotted the knife in the snow.
And Nicholai Shmitz, was charged with 25 years for, "Hiding weapons in a residintal area"
He felt his body turning to dust and his whole life's savings gone to nothing, like everything was just a waste.
When they had been in the carriage taking them across Russia, where the stars were the only light there, and the world was so cold that the chattering of the teeth was unstopable and the frostbite was unbearable.
There, deep underground was a mine, and the men were set to work.
The long days lingered so much it almost drove them all insane, but one day, a horrible catastrophe happened.
A man who had gone crazy from lack of food and too much work, had somehow freed himself of the chains around his ankles, and ran up and down the mine, the guards tried to catch him but he was too fast for them, until he came out of the tunnel, and screamed like an idiot.
And there was an avalanche, the snow from the highest peaks of the mountains rumbled down and blocked the mine.
People tried desperatly hard to get out, but they made little progress.
By the time the government workers: Soldiers, police and guards managed to get through, all the workers were dead, with only skeletons and worn out clothes remained of the trapped prisoners of the mine.
But the wierdest thing was, when the man had escaped, his chains lay broken in to bits dangling from a hole in the ground.
The hold lead to a tunnel so long down that even if you dropped a stone you wouldn't hear it fall, plus it would take ages to reach the bottom.
One guard was hauled down there by rope, it seemed an eternity of going down and down... when he reached the bottom, written in blood were the letters, "NS"
Nobody knew what it was, until many years later, they came to the conclusion that, "NS" were the initials of Nicholai Shmitz, but the N was on top of the S, so the N pointed North and the S pointed South, so Nicholai, if he escaped would keep going South, knowing that it led home.
But why did he dig a tunnel so deep?
And wasn't it a coincedence that his initials were the same as North and South?
The wierdest thing about this story, was that they went south, traipsing Nicholai's stps, and found him in the snow, his dead body frozen, with that rusty knife in his right hand, held over his chest.
On the same day that they found him, his wife dissapeared. -
