I sat in the room I shared with two other girls, Elli and Britney. We were planning our escape. They wouldn't start for a year; they'd just turned twelve. But my birthday was a week away. I needed to get out.

I watched the boys and girls in their combat uniforms leave the house and into the truck to go to combat. They didn't look happy.
I reached behind me and touched my one braid down my back. -

I hurried out, since everyone was lining up. I won't turn 14 till next month, but I worry for my two best friends,Grace and Lauren, who will soon. As I hurried out, I looked at all the other kids in uniforems, dull and in misery.

I peeked out the window. Does anybody notice we're gone? I glanced at the uniform they'd given me, now crumpled in a pile on the floor. "Okay, so, let's see..." I looked at the map with the other girls.
"We were lucky the boys like to climb through vents," Ellie said. Britney nodded. I looked under our beds. Everything we needed was under there. We were prepared. "We should leave tonight." -
I got up and paced the room. There was something missing. No, someone missing. Alexis.
I left the room and searched for Alexis. I went into Lauren's room.
"Hey, have you seen Alexis?" I asked. -
I stared in shock at Grace, trying to quickly hide the map behind my back. "N-no. And haven't you ever heard of knocking?"
But Britney, being the pretty-but-not-so-smart girl she was, begin to talk. "No. Why would we? We're planning our escape, she isn't part of it."
Ellie and I both elbowed Britney at the same time. "Shut up!"
