name gave me this picture, I made a crappy story out of it.
The forest lay in silence, the only noise being the occasional flutter of wings from a sparrow or raven, maybe a cricket. The river rushed by so constantly that if you were there for awhile, you became almost deaf to the noise. Fog clung to the ground and the lower parts of the trees, making it hard to see the ground in some places. It was late October, and chilly, hence the fog.
If you stood any farther than thirty feet away, you would not have seen the silvery form that came out of the fog, followed by an orange, dim but very neccsary light. Claws, shortened from digging dens and battles between packs, pointed ears that were aware of the slightest sound, soft gray eyes that surveyed the area of forest before her, before it melted back into fog, silvery feathers that stayed bunched up on the she-wolf's back, ready to unfold at a moment's notice.
Most likely, you would've been too awestruck at the silver winged wolf to notice the skinny, two-legged figure that followed, holding a lantern in one hand, the origin of the light. The other hand cradled a dark wolf pup, also a female, with dark wings like those of a raven, and clear violet eyes. She looked more like her father, you would not have known that she was the daughter of the silver wolf. The human's messy, dark blonde, shoulder-length hair, blue-gray eyes, and the freckle-dotted face was hardly able to be seen through the gray mist of fog.
Most humans would call her ugly. The wolf pup did not know the difference between beauty and ugliness in looks, and it was good that way.
"Mother, it's too cold. I want to go back home!" the pup whined, trying to catch the attention of the silver wolf. "Quiet, Raven..." the human whispered, trying - and failing - to get the pup to understand the importance of this place. The silver wolf stopped, and smiled. "It's alright, Brea. She's only a pup." she assured the human. Brea gave a half-smile, not quite sure just how to answer the she-wolf. "I still don't understand why we're here, Zamma. It's just a forest, there are several like it." Raven mumbled, obviously bored with the whole situation. Zamma sighed, walked to the middle of the forest clearing and sat down. Brea followed, still holding Raven. Raven squirmed, trying to jump free from Brea's arms. "Oh no, just how long are we going to be here?" Raven whimpered, clearly not enjoying the idea of staying in the forest for any longer than a few minutes. Zamma chuckled at the young she-wolf's impatience, then became serious once again. "The rest of the pack remains at the dens, but I have brought you two out to the forest, as Raven has never heard the story before, and Brea...well, I figured Raven would eventually get tired and refuse to walk out here." Raven looked offended, and Zamma laughed. The silver winged wolf then looked up, and directed her soft gaze and the pale full moon...
...that lit Chitt's way, as he continued the trek back to the dens, a tawny rabbit in his jaws. The knowledge that Syona - his mate - had just given birth to four perfectly healthy pups definately made the trip easier. Chitt's dark brown fur and wings made him hard too see against the forest, and that was definately a good thing. Humans were always greedy, and they hunted winged wolves for their fur and their feathers, without thinking about the wolves' own wishes. Of course, Chitt's brown fur did not camaflouge him so well in winter, but oh, well.
Venu watched Chitt appear out of the forest, a rabbit in his mouth. Chitt then trotted over to his own den, where Syona, who was also Venu's sister, was caring for four newborn pups. Venu's black coat and wings were hard to see against the night sky, but his amber eyes gave him away. Venu's silver-furred daughter, Zamma, played with some other pups a few yards away. For a moment, Venu smiled. It was as if pups had no idea how much danger the pack faced, mainly against humans and their guns. Venu's smile disappeared as soon as he saw Kavi, the dark gray-and-black wolf, run into the clearing, out of breath, green eyes filled with shock and fear. "The humans...they know....where we...are...and...and they come!"
After fleeing the dens they had come to know over the past few decades, the pack took shelter in a cave near the edge of the forest. Venu looked around, making sure each wolf was there, then realized that Synoa, the snow white-furred wolf, was nowhere to be found. He turned to Chitt. "Did your mate go hunting?" he asked. Chitt shook his head. "When we were halfway here, she realized she had left the pups, and went back to get them." he said quietly, staring at nothing in particular, not trying to hide the worry in his voice. Venu simply nodded. "I will form a patrol to go find her, and your pups. She's my sister, remember." he assured the dark brown wolf.
Venu, Kavi, and a golden she-wolf known as Laxmi ran through the forest and back toward the dens, their speed increasing with every step.If you had been standing in the forest that night, you would have only seen three blurs - one black, one gray, and one gold - flash by you, each one seeming to glow in the full moonlight. The forest became more and more familiar as they went, and soon they recognized the familiar clearing. Laxmi glanced at Kavi, who glanced at Venu. They all recognized the scent that clung to the air: death. They slowed to a trot, and walked out of the trees and into the clearing.
"There's blood...everywhere." Laxmi gasped, her lips twisting into a snarl, as they surveyed the scene around them. Synoa was nowhere to be seen, and neither were the humans, but the blood was hers. A loud, high-pitched whine pierced the air, originating from the den that had belonged to Synoa and Chitt. "The pups!" Kavi exclaimed, before dashing across the clearing and into the den.
Venu just sat in the middle of the clearing, staring at the blood around him, amber eyes filled with shock and sorrow. Kavi emerged from the den with two pups. "Laxmi, go get the other two. They're hungry, we need to get back to the rest of the pack...
...soon, it's getting very late." Zamma sighed. Raven blinked, and just stared. "But...but I don't like that story! They get revenge next, right?" the little pup snapped. "I thought you wanted to go home as soon as possible?" Zamma asked, tilting her head to one side. Brea seemed to be the only one who caught the glimmer of amusement in Zamma's eyes. "Well...I-I do...but you can tell us on the way home, right, Mother?" Raven stuttered. Zamma sighed again. "I suppose so." The silver wolfess agreed, standing up and walking past Brea and Raven, back into the gray mist of fog. Brea scrambled to her feet, afraid of being left behind in the fog, as they had only found their way to the clearing by Zamma's keen sense of smell. Brea caught up immediately. "Zamma, the lantern's almost out." the human child worried. Zamma made no reply. "Mother! Tell us what happened next!" Raven demanded, giving a flap of her wings in annoyance and impatience. Zamma sighed once again. "Venu wished to gain revenge on the humans - and he did. In the middle of the night, when humans are rarely out of their homes, Venu led the pack into a place that the humans called 'town', and slaughtered all humans possible, even the pups. But only half the pack believed that the humans deserved to die, and over time, the pack was divided in two: The BloodMoon pack, and the HalfMoon pack." Zamma finished. "And now you're the HalfMoon alpha!" Raven added excitedly. "I suppose so, but still..."
The voices drifted off into the night, as the three figures disappeared into the fog once again, leaving the forest and its tale behind them. No wolf or human took thought of the great trees or the river, which had seen everything, lived through every moment - Chitt's successful -
