Just to weigh in here, if I'm allowed:
What makes a welcoming committee different from just saying welcome? I feel that new users always get welcomed by some users when they join. I wasn't here in 2011 so I'm not sure what a welcoming committee would entail. Out of pure curiosity! -
It may have been post-2011 bc my entire childhood is wicked fuzzy, but I faintly recall just a bunch of new folks specifically reaching out to welcome and give advice on the site n how stuff works? I also recall some weird elitism from higher members back then so idk

this is not the impression I wanted anyone to get of the site
I'm imagining a group of people committed to being kind and helpful to new users. I was hoping, because it seems like it takes a few days sometimes before anyone acknowledges a new user. I know that's not always the case, but it happens often enough and I think it makes new users feel unwelcome. I'd also like people dedicated to explaining site etiquette and answering questions, so new users don't find out about the trends on this site by getting their head bit off for making a newbie mistake. -
