Basically, the LHC is built to break subatomic particles apart by smashing the particles together very very hard, and the particles that result from that process tell us about the particles that were smashed together. The harder you smash them together the more interesting the results are, which is why it's such a huge collider.
Apparently people online have gotten this mixed up with all kinds of random stuff this time around. Whenever the LHC or other similar particle colliders are started up there tends to be a wave online of people going "BUT WHAT IF [insert impossible thing] HAPPENS!?",
For instance awhile back journalists got their hands on the info that scientists thought that maybe the LHC would be capable of creating tiny black holes, which would be incredible to study, even though such black holes would evaporate basically instantly upon creation. What results from that evaporation could tell us a lot about black holes.
journalists went ham with it, and because people have this misconception that black holes are universal vacuum cleaners, eating up anything vaguely near them, people started freaking out that the scientists were going to create a black hole that would devour the Earth. In reality, as I said, such a thing would evaporate instantly and even if you could somehow keep it stable, just feeding it enough to keep it in existence would be one hell of a challenge. Like trying to start a forest fire by blowing on one tiny ember...like, sure, possible, but that's gonna be one hell of a task. And that's just feeding it enough to keep it existing, not even to mention growing, especially at the exponential rate it would have to get it to devour the Earth.
I'm not sure what people are freaking out about this time, I saw one person saying it was going to steal people's life force while they're all drunk for the 4th (side note the LCH is in Europe, so that's a long way to be pulling people's life force from...)
I have also seen the whole "they're trying to open a portal" thing, which I can only assume comes from the idea of making a black hole, which then could somehow be made into a wormhole/portal...even though, as I said, making and keeping a black hole would be more or less impossible. There's not going to be any portals, no life force stealing, there's not going to be any Earth devouring, there's just gonna be science and some anniversary celebration. Anything else you see online is just people that don't understand what the scientists are doing. -
No, the LHC has nothing to do with nuclear energy.
Yes, the insanity on the internet about it is entirely baseless.
The "god particle" is not necessarily the "thing behind everything", but it is a manifestation of the mechanism that gives particles their inherent mass - most particles' mass actually comes from other factors, not the actual mass of the particles, but particles do have inherent mass and the higgs mechanism is what causes that. The higgs boson is the force carrier, the particle representation, of that mechanism, like how light (EM or electromagnetic radiation) is the force carrier for electromagnetism, the force that both electricity and magnetism come from.
