Thread Topic: Virtual workshop ideas?
-
I was given the opportunity to help host a virtual workshop geared towards mental health and LGBT+ needs.
I had some ideas but I wanted to think of something that's highly engaging and empowering and also is something I feel qualified to talk about.
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm definitely super interested in mental health awareness but it's really hard to think of a specific thing to focus on.
If you're in the LGBT community or struggle with mental health please tell me some things that you think need to be talked about more. What problems do you face? What topics would you like to see discussed in a positive and empowering way? Do you have any interactive ideas to promote online engagement?
I'm interested in anything you have to say. The workshop premise is vague and open to interpretation. It's being put on by an old friend of mine who works as an advocate for the topics mentioned. -
I don’t know if this will help or not but—
I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community and one issue I face is thinking I’m not good enough. I see a lot of others with that issue as well. Lots of people use religion as an excuse for their homophobia, but the Bible doesn’t even say it’s wrong. People have committed suicide over this. I think we all need to be reminded that there are other people like us, and those people are great. So are we. We haven’t done anything wrong; we’ve only been the people we were made to be.
Again, I don’t know if this will help at all -
That is super helpful thank you for taking the time to reply.
I totally agree and think that that's a huge issue. I was listening to a podcast last night that touched on some of the things you mentioned and it was really insightful for me, so I am definitely going to write that down. Mental health and LGBT issues go hand in hand and it breaks my heart that there's not more being done to help it.
If I do end up making the workshop I'll link it here to help anyone who needs it.
Again thank you so much for that! I'm sorry you have to have those feelings. -
You're right too though. A lot of biblical teachings were based off of the needs of the society. With higher mortality rates and a very low access to medicine being homosexual was frowned upon not for the act itself, but the problems it caused for society. If you were gay you couldn't help with population and that was a serious concern for people in that time.
It's sad to see how that teaching has been weaponized into something that's super damaging nowadays. I think religion can be very important for some people but it's never okay to use it as a tool to cause implicit harm in other people's lives. -
Discussing how homophobia and transphobia are often targeted towards black trans women the most and encouraging and uplifting those voices in lgbtq spaces. Maybe also taking a moment to recognize the strides specifically black trans women took in the lgbtq movement
