In elementary school, my art teacher would have us turn shapes into things, going, the neck of the giraffe is basically a rectangle, the head is a rectangle and a triangle with a circle at the end.
A person was a bunch of rectangles, ovals, and circles.
I could not draw that way. It just wasn't natural to me.
I have to start with drawing the figure. itself. I use minimal guidelines. I start with a line for the shoulders, and beyond that it's guidelines for the face (not the head) and sometimes the spine. I also use a guideline if two people are making eye contact to see where things go.
But other than that I don't use any guidelines, shapes, or anything.
I was so glad in middle school when my art teacher basically went, "This is the goal, get there however you want." -
We’d just do whatever honestly. Perspective, cool art, random things the teachers would find on the internet

In middle school we did metal sculpture, clay, glass, threading, it was really cool
There was a whole arts side of the campus -
