Genetic tests show that Native Americans were originally from Asia, and yet we say they're native to America.
Scottish people were originally from Ireland, but they're not Irish, they're Scottish.
In America, American isn't an ethnicity. If someone asks me what my ethnicity is, I don't say American, I say German, same with almost everyone else I've met. America is where you're from and most likely born and bred, but it's not your ethnicity.
So this piques my curiosity. How long do people need to live in a land or country in order for it to be an ethnicity? -
I would say that it depends on the culture and what you mean by ethnicity as some cultures are more rich and take more time to adjust to whenever it comes to things such as their accent and way of life that is if that's what you mean by culture. For example somebody coming from say Germany to the US and continuing a generation lineage for something like five generations specifically in the US one could easily call the people of the 5th generation American as the traces from Germany would be less and less notable. That is of course in modern-day scenarios wall in history it was a whole nother story.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. But by ethnicity I meant like if someone asked me what my ethnicity was I'd say I'm 13/16 German, 1/8 English, and 1/8 Belgian.
