Thread Topic: A LGBTQ+ question!
-
Do you personally think artist/creators that aren’t part of the community should sell LGBTQ+ products/art/etc?
Would you prefer the person to be a part of the community in order to sell things? Do you think they are taking an advantage or seizing an opportunity that’s isn’t fair for those who are actually part of the community?
Would you rather buy something from a person that is within the community vs someone who isn’t? -
I never thought of this

Me neither until I saw a tiktok with someone mentioning it. ^^

Speaking as a pansexual non-binary, I say that it's alright for non-lgbtq people to sell LGBTQ content/items, as long as they aren't taking advantage of the community itself or silencing smaller LGBTQ creators that also deserve a spotlight.
I'll buy anything that is useful to me, whether or not the person is LGBTQ or not. -
I mean, if they haven't experienced the issues that LGBTQ+ people have experienced, they don't really have the right to be profiting off of it. Feels very queer-baity. I don't buy LGBTQ+ merch or whatever, but if I did I'd much rather that money go to someone who's actually part of the community. Especially when it's a community that has experienced so much oppression by straight people. It seems unfair for a straight person to then profit from that just because it's more widely acceptable now.

I agree with Rain! It's amazing for non-LGBTQ+ people to support people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community, but making a profit off of queer merchandise doesn't sound right.
