In what context did we say we can't delete accounts?

When people ask and stuff

That's very vague, but I'm gonna try to explain regardless.
Firstly, there's the simple matter that deleting an account deletes every post it's ever made, which tampers with the history of the forums. In other words, if your account is deleted, every thread you've ever interacted with is now incomplete, and every conversation you've ever been a part of now appears one-sided. This isn't a reason we can't delete an account, it's just a request that you really consider the memories you've made here that aren't yours alone before you ask that an account be deleted. I've personally lost a lot of my writing and conversations I cherished just because accounts were deleted and page counts were altered dramatically.
That said, when we say we can't delete accounts, what we usually mean is that we don't have any easy means to do so. We can't just click a button and delete an account.
Our method for deleting accounts is to mark a bunch of posts offensive and pray.
There are a number of factors playing in to whether or not we can delete an account using this method. Those factors are:
Status. A high level account will take an ungodly number of marked posts to delete. That would be fine if this were a regular job, but keep in mind that none of the mods are being paid for their hard work and dedication to this god forsaken site. That's a lot of going through the accounts post history and deleting posts, not knowing when we can stop or if it'll work at all. A low-level account is a different story- generally we can delete a newbie account simply by marking two or three of its posts, which is how we're able to handle the troll accounts that pop up occasionally.
Activity level. An account that hasn't been active in years (think older user coming back in a newbie account and requesting deletion of their ancient account) usually won't delete no matter how many posts we mark. An account that has been recently active can sometimes be a little easier to delete, but we've found a number of exceptions that still won't delete no matter what the activity level is.
Pure luck. On top of all the limitations we're already dealing with, fairly often, things around here just don't work. Our ability to delete accounts seems to operate on a completely random basis. We've begged GTQ Guy to fix a lot of the issues we're encountering, to no avail. But hey. At least now we have a cute little floating search button!
So. Can we delete accounts? The answer is a definite maybe.
We can delete individual posts without a problem, so it doesn't necessarily hinder our ability to protect y'all. It just opens us up to jabs like yours.
My suggestion, if you no longer want to use an account, is to simply not. Change the password to a keyboard smash and log out. If it's just certain posts bothering you, you can always ask us to delete those for you. Deleting an account is usually unnecessary unless it's an active troll account, is a huge and often unsuccessful endeavor for us, and, as I said earlier, can ruin some crucial memories for the people you've interacted with over the course of your time here. -
maybe more information than you wanted, but I need y'all to understand that we're not trying to deceive you. we're doing our best with what we have.
