Some people just want to chat, so they'll go into everyone's threads saying, "Hi."
Some people look for things they can comment on. Like if someone said, "I just got a smoothie!" I would say, " I've never had a smoothie before." and the conversation goes from there. Those are the two things I've seen most often.
