If you wanted to prove P!= ... There's a great deal to say about this question, but as Jonathan Paulson already alluded to, the "fundamental reason" why P vs. NP is so hard is that polynomial-time algorithms can exploit such an enormous set of mathematical ideas. An algorithm need not do anything like what you expect.
