sometimes I think maybe things were better back when i was a child. even if i didn't know everything, at least i didn't feel so completely lost. honestly i have no idea what i'm doing anymore. i feel like im taking the easy way out by getting certified as a pharmacy tech but at this point I don't know what else to do. I still want to write but it's so hard, my thoughts are so scattered and i can't concentrate on anything for very long. i have ideas but making them into actual works is another thing entirely.

The altar was the only thing they left untouched, though Warren knows why the small wooden well still stands. The lamp’s candle burns in it’s painted glass case, casting purple and gold light across his cheeks as he lowers the bucket. The wheel creaked as he turned it, breaking the silence. The well was always louder when he was alone.
“How long will you be gone?”
The voice came out of nowhere, a sudden presence behind him, and a gust of cold air. All the tricks in the bag. He threw a cursory glance over his shoulder- Viola didn’t spook him very much anymore, not with her out-of-thin-air appearances, anyways. Her pale face still sent shivers down his spine, though, as if looking at her was wrong.
“Not more than a few days, Gods permitting,” Warren turned his head back to the well, beginning to pull the bucket up. It was heavier now, and he could hear the ocean in the wind of the well. Viola slipped over his shoulder, water thin, and down into the black abyss as the rope kept rolling up past her. No jitters, just so as long as he doesn’t look at her face. He’s used to all her gimmicks, even the hollow echo that she threw out of the well before she replied.
“With the wrath they brought down on you today? I doubt it,” Her voice was too small for the sass in it, but Warren ignored her for a second, filling his canteens and jugs. She let out another howl when he got to the second one.
“What’s going on with all the screeching, Viola? And that was the king."
“It was scary.”
“You’re a ghost,” Warren uncapped the first canteen he had filled, more than ready to drink the crisp well water after a full day of working in the sun. He wasn’t done yet, he still needed to leave before sunrise if he wanted to make good time. But the well water always gave him a bit more energy; it had, after all, been blessed by saints.
Viola didn’t respond, so he tipped the canteen towards the lantern, and then lifted it to his mouth, knocking it back.
The thickness of it had him gagging immediately, metal clanging as he tossed the canteen to the side. Blood splattered as he spit out what was in his mouth, falling to his knees to cough up what he had swallowed. His palms came away from the ground wet, shiny and red. Warren toppled backwards in his haste to get away from the puddle that was still spilling out of the canteen. It seemed endless.
As the blood crept closer, he crawled around it and away from the temple. Viola materialized at the edge of it, watching him, her hollow eyes making his stomach plunge.
“I don’t think you should go,” Viola whispered, “I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“I have to,” Warren wasn’t sure why he whispered back. His heart was still beating too fast for sense, “I can’t afford to miss the break in storms.”
“You won’t come back.”
“Don’t I always, though?” He tried to laugh but it sounded fake, even to him. Warren looked down, unable to meet her eyes any longer. At some point he must have wiped his hands on his trousers, because now there was blood smeared all over the fabric. He’d have to change before he left. He couldn’t go into town looking like a lunatic. “Viola, did they do something to the well?”
Once again, he was met by silence. When he looked up, she was gone.
Yeah, the vanishing-into-thin-air thing gave him the jitters, too.
