Because I'm from a public school, I don't know if they operate different, but I'm going to assume it's similar.
For me, I was allowed to pick my courses. You have to meet a certain requirement for each category; 4 history credits, 4 English, 4 math, 4 science, etc. You'll have a bunch of electives you can choose from. Some schools do year round classes, where you have the same classes for an entire year. My high school had semester long classes, so you'd have a total of 8 classes, 4 per each semester.
We had different levels of classes: Regular, Honors, AP, and college. AP is super difficult and NOT worth it if you're someone who struggles to keep up with ridiculous work loads. -
Yeah, I don't know. I think they mentioned something about AP? You get to work on your own level. They told me there was this one girl that did both her sophomore and her Jjnior year in her sophomore year.

I strongly recommend avoiding AP your freshman year, and if you do decide to take any, don't take all AP courses. Make sure you have a healthy mix.
I'd say you should try to get into some college courses, but if you have a scholarship that makes college free for you, I wouldn't worry about that too much. Be strategic in your course planning if you guys do get to choose what you take! -
