He had illegally married lovers under a ban of such activity by an emperor who believed that marriage made men weak and unfit for war. The bishop was Saint Valentine, and his lover was the once-blind daughter of one of his guards, who brought her to him after Valentine was arrested?
He signed the letter, Love, your Valentine.
Fun fact: He was believed to have been executed on February fourteenth, back when they used letters to sort years. -
