Thread Topic: ALRIGHT GUYS I NEED HELP
-
I am writing a completely new play to take to a HUGE competition. I have a plot and everything, I just need a title and help naming a few people! That's where you guys come in.
The setting is a bookshop cafe. (AKA, bookstore as well as a coffee shop) It's a small, homey place, which was founded almost forty years ago by the current owner's mother, who left her the shop. Other than the owner, there are only two other employees, because that's all the place can afford. Honestly, with the lack of business lately, the owner could probably fire both of them and just run the place herself.
Business has been declining, which is part of the plot. There's this huge chain bookshop cafe that opened up in town which has pretty much monopolized the competition. Still, they're holding on for dear life. They refuse to give up...
At least, the baristas do. The owner has realized that she doesn't have many options, and has taken an offer from the owner of the very company that is putting her out of business- In only a few months time, their store will become a family-friendly, homey version of the chain store.
Obviously, her baristas don't know yet. They think she's going to announce that they're closing for good, so they decide to do one last good thing for her- Set her up with a regular customer who she's totally in love with. Only... That customer is the estranged brother of the owner of the chain company, and everything goes to hell in a handbasket.
The cast-
Janette, the owner of the bookshop cafe. Mid forties, sort of eccentric. Probably owns lots and lots of cats.
Ashton, college freshman, has been working at the cafe for five years now. She views Janette as a mother figure. Hopeless romantic, is always trying to set people up together. Her plans never go as... Well, planned.
Jasper, also a college freshman, who's only been at the cafe for three years. He's not a scheming as Ashton, but he's sort of a pushover, and always goes along with whatever she wants. For the majority of the play, the goal is for him to appear to be in love with Ashton, only for it to be revealed that he has a boyfriend. (This is relevant, I promise.)
Wells Vandertramp, the regular customer who is hopelessly in love with Janette, but doesn't realize it. He's also in his forties, and supppper nerdy. He doesn't get along with his sister. (His last name isn't revealed until the climax of the play, pretty much)
Mary Vandertramp, owner of the KittyCat cafe and bookshop chain, very charismatic and manipulative. Can't stand her brother, since he was their father's favorite. She's extremely rude.
Unnamed ex-barista, Jasper's boyfriend. He works at the KittyCat cafe and helps to take Mary down with some important classified information.
Unnamed party-goer, who accidentally points out that Wells and Mary are related.
