I'm working on one where nuclear weapons have destroyed the planet and created monsters.
The monsters then attempt to destroy the remaining humans. Most of the people think the monsters are servants of god, sent to destroy the wicked and save the planet.
The monsters are immune to gun fire as their scales cannot be pierced with bullets. Humanity can do nothing to stop them.. Humanity is destroyed, god deserts them, and the earth dies shortly after.
