PROLOGUE FOR BOOK 1 OF ROETH: THE DEATH ROOM
It was the darkest December day I have ever had.
The snow was like a disease, it was everywhere, covering the rooftops of the houses, and the lanes, I tried to catch the snow flakes in my hands, but I wasn't successful at all.
Mama had dragged me with her to the furniture shop, I remember the day well, women wore scruffy black coats and fur hats, men in dark brown suits stared at me solemnly.
The sky was an ash grey filled with clouds, it stretched to the farthest point my eyes could see.
The world seemed to have no sunshine and happiness in it, people just walked by glumly, not a smile nor a gleam of happiness in their empty eyes.
And there it was, we had been walking down the lane trying to get past the busy crowds, all the while I had tightly on to mama's hand and struggled to keep up, and there it was. We saw the shop.
From the outside, the sign had wood carvings or flowers, leaves and vines, the window showed many different kinds of furniture, chairs that had backs and seat covered in red velvet, antique tables that looked old, and were probably priceless, cushions made of silk with gold patterns on it, and many other things there.
But as soon as mama was through the door, she immediately went over to one particular item. A chest.
It was made of dark wood, and in some places, pieces and shapes had been cut out and replaced with beech wood, there were zig zag patterns all around the lid and sides, and lines of small triangles formed a border over the lid, not only that, but it was huge, I could get it with my four dollies and have plenty of space for movement.
Mama was fascinated by the trunk; she whirled round it, gasping like it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen.
1
I for one thought it was quite ugly, why was she so fascinated by the trunk? And what was she going to do with it?
The bald business man that was standing there looked at me funny, I don't know what it was about him, but I didn't think I liked him much.
Then, the trunk was covered and put in to a case, and my mother paid the scary man, his expression always seemed grave.
Later that night, I climbed in to my bed, the sheets had been changed and I had white douve's, my mother lit a candle even though the lights were perfectly fine.
"More pure" she'd say, "makes you feel more relaxed"
She came in to my bed room, and sat by me, her cheeks were shining, I immediately knew that she had been crying.
"Mother…" I said, "Is something wrong?"
She looked down at her knees. I sat up and looked at her, this woman with circles under her eyes, and black hair shaped like a bowl, with dark green eyes was my mother, I looked exactly like her, the same hair and eyes, and head shape, the only thing different from her was my fringe that was combed left ways and I'd tuck it's tip behind my left ear.
As for my father, well, I only had that pale, yet creamy skin color of his.
People would always say that I was my mother's clone, and I believed them, I was only 6 years old now. But it already showed.
But when I woke up. I didn't know that any longer.
