- He wanted to take over Oregon completely. Puget Sound, controlled by Britain, was wanted by Polk.

- Since 1818, the British and the Americans agreed to share the Oregon territory
- Britain had rejected an offer from America before
- Polk offered Richard Pakenham, on July 1845, a boundary at 49th parallel
- Richard said no because this did not let the British navigate
- Polk wanted this agreement because then America could control Puget Sound
- Polk had only made an offer to respect the people who made the compromise and the author states to have avoided war
- Polk stated that he would no longer make offers
- Congress were nervous that Polks notice proposal would start war with Britain
- The congress men argued for 4 months
- In April 1846 they enacted a measure to give Britain notice to terminate join occupancy
- Because of starvation in Britain, the British did not care much about Oregon

- British started to trade with America, thus making Polk hope that tariffs would decrease
- The British and Americans finally signed a treaty in June 1846 which made Oregon a part of America

- After Polk settled Oregon, he focused on Texas
- Trouble started between Mexico and America since 1836, when Texas became a lone state
- Mexico blamed America for Texass up rising
- Polk ignored Mexicos warnings not to interfere with their business
- Polk sent agents to Texas to get the Texans to call for an annexation
- Polk sent William S. Parrott to Mexico City in order to convince the leaders to allow Texas to submerge into America
- Polk started to bring out armies in order to make his point clear
- He ordered Zachary Taylor to move his troops from Louisiana to Texas
- Polk stated that no invading force would be allowed to cross the Rio Grande
- The author stated that Polk was not a fool, and knew the art of war

- Mexico was willing to sorta things out in a friendly manner
- Polk prohibited European countries that controlled states. This was known as the Polk Doctrine
- He was willing to pay 40 million for California and New Mexico
- Polk failed when is came to gaining a secret fund of 500,000 to a 1 million fund
- He had wanted to use the money to send to Paredes to strengthen his government during negotiations
- Alexander J. Atocha told Polk that the Mexicans would give California and New Mexico at 30 million. However, only if America put up a threat that gave them no choice
- Polk got nothing good out of diplomacy by bribery
- War started to seem like the best way to settle the case
- Polk thought that war would be needed by early May
- He prepared a letter to congress on May 12 asking for authority to go through with war
- Before sending the letter, Polk learned that Mexicans had crossed the Rio Grande and fired on American Soil
- He declared war on the 11 and 12 of May
- Some European countries threatened to side with Mexico, however Polk did not allow interference or fear
- He called the Americans who did not support his discussion treasonous
- Polk wanted California for its ports just like Oregon
- Polk that that Britain wanted California and was not willing to give it up for anyone
- Larkin had tried to persuade the California people to join America
- In 1845, Polk made Larkin confidential agent
- Larkins had to inform the Californians that Polk would not let them become a colony to Britain or France. However, they would not get between Mexico and California
- America welcomed California to become a free state

- Secretary of War, George Bancroft, told Commodore John D. Sloat, commander of American fleet off the Mexican coast
- They wanted them to be ready to blocked and seize California ports on the first signs of aggression
- Fremont caused a lot of trouble in California
- Polk sided with Kearny and stated that Stockton and Lieutenant Col. Fremont did not recognize the authority of general Kearny
- After the war, Polk stated that California would be gained along with New Mexico indemnification of war
- The more Mexico was hostile the more compensation America would receive
- The public became mad at Polk when they did not know his true agenda
- Nicholas Trist signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo for the United States. This treaty formed a boarder line south of Diego Bay

- Polk did not want slavery to expand completely however he did not want slavery to end or be prohibited
- Polk thought that slavery would never exist in the territory south of 36 degrees 30 line
- Polk left his term satisfied, but he was not happy that his successor was a whig named Zachary Taylor
- The people wanted the expansionist spirit, and made sure to embrace it
- He achieved: The Polk Doctrine, he added over one half million square miles of territory to America in 4 years -
