  It's actually pretty difficult to explain.
  I'm going to start reading it soon because the anime is rather different from the manga.

  Ghouls.
  In the manga, Kaneki never joins the Aogiri (a not-so-good group of ghouls), which changes things dramatically because all of season 2, Tokyo Ghoul Root A, Kaneki is with the Aogiri.
