ToponymyEdit
The county of Yorkshire was so named as it is theShire(administrative area or county) of the City ofYorklocali/jk/or York's Shire. "York" comes from the Viking name for the city,Jrvk" is fromOld English, scir meaning care or official charge.[13]The "shire" suffix is locally pronounced/-/"shuh", or occasionally/-i/, a homophone of "sheer".[14]
HistoryEdit

Celtic tribesEdit
Early inhabitants of Yorkshire wereCelts, who formed two separate tribes, theBrigantesand theParisi. The Brigantes controlled territory which later became all of theNorth Riding of Yorkshireand theWest Riding of Yorkshire. The tribe controlled most ofNorthern Englandand more territory than any other Celtic tribe in England.[15]That they had the Yorkshire area as their heartland is evident in thatIsurium Brigantum(now known asAldborough) was the capital town of theircivitasunder Roman rule. Six of the nine Brigantianpoleisdescribed byClaudius Ptolemaeusin theGeographiafall within the historic county.[16][17]The Parisi, who controlled the area that would become theEast Riding of Yorkshire, might have been related to theParisiiofLutetia Parisiorum,Gaul(known today asParis,France).[18]Their capital was atPetuaria, close to the Humber estuary. Although theRoman conquest of Britainbegan in 43AD, the Brigantes remained in control of their kingdom as aclient stateofRomefor an extended period, reigned over by the Brigantian monarchsCartimanduaand her husbandVenutius. Initially, this situation suited both the Romans and the Brigantes, who were known as the mostmilitanttribe in Britain.[19]
Roman YorkshireEdit
Statue ofConstantine IoutsideYork.
Queen Cartimandua left her husbandVenutiusfor his armour bearer,Vellocatus, setting off a chain of events which changed control of the Yorkshire area. Cartimandua, due to her good relationship with the Romans, was able to keep control of the kingdom; however her former husband stagedrebellionsagainst her and her Roman allies.[20]At the second attempt, Venutius seized the kingdom, but the Romans, under generalPetillius Cerialis, conquered the Brigantes in 71AD.[21]
Thefortifiedcity ofEboracum(now known asYork) was named as capital ofBritannia Inferiorand joint-capital of allRoman Britain.[22]During the two years before the death of EmperorSeptimius Severus, theRoman Empirewas run from Eboracum by him.[23]
Another emperor,Constantius Chlorus, died in Yorkshire during a visit in 306AD. This saw his sonConstantine the Greatproclaimed emperor in the city, who would become renowned due to his contributions toChristianity.[24]In the early 5th century, theRoman rule ceasedwith the withdrawal of the last active Roman troops. By this stage, the Empire was in heavy decline.[23]
Second Celtic period and AnglesEdit
After the Romans left, small Celtic kingdoms arose in Yorkshire; theKingdom of EbraucaroundYorkand more notably theKingdom of ElmetinWest Yorkshire.[25][26]Elmet remained independent from the NorthumbrianAnglesuntil some time in the early 7th century, when KingEdwinofNorthumbriaexpelled its last king, Certic, and annexed the region. At its greatest extent, Northumbria stretched from theIrish Seato theNorth Seaand fromEdinburghdown toHallamshirein South Yorkshire.[27]
Kingdom of JrvkEdit
Main article:Kingdom of Jrvk
Coin from Eric Bloodaxe's reign
An army ofDanishVikings, theGreat Heathen Army[28]as its enemies often referred to it, invaded Northumbrian territory in 866AD. The Danes conquered and assumed what is now York and renamed itJrvk, making it the capital city of a new Danish kingdom under the same name. The area which this kingdom covered included most of Southern Northumbria, roughly equivalent to the borders of Yorkshire extending further West.[29]
The Danes went on to conquer an even larger area of England which afterwards became known as theDanelaw; but whereas most of the Danelaw was still English land, albeit in submission to Viking overlords, it was in theKingdom of Jrvkthat the only truly Viking territory on mainland Britain was ever established. The Kingdom prospered, taking advantage of the vast trading network of the Viking nations, and established commercial ties with theBritish Isles,North-West Europe, theMediterraneanand theMiddle East.[30]
Founded by the DaneHalfdan Ragnarssonin 875,[31]ruled for the great part by Danish kings, and populated by the families and subsequent descendants of Danish Vikings, the leadership of the kingdom nonetheless passed intoNorwegianhands during its twilight years.[31]Eric Bloodaxe, an ex-king of Norway who was the last independent Viking king of Jrvk, is a particularly noted figure in history,[32]and his bloodthirsty approach towards leadership may have been at least partly responsible for convincing the Danish inhabitants of the region to accept English sovereignty so readily in the years that followed.
After around 100 years of its volatile existence, the Kingdom of Jorvik finally came to an end. TheKingdom of Wessexwas now in its ascendant and established its dominance over the North in general, placing Yorkshire again withinNorthumbria, which retained a certain amount of autonomy as an almost-independen -

This article is about the flag of the state called Ireland. For flags associated with the island of Ireland, see List of flags of Ireland. For flags used in Northern Ireland, see List of flags used in Northern Ireland.

Flag of Ireland.svg
Name Irish tricolour
Use National flag and ensign
Proportion 1:2
Adopted 19161922
Design A vertical tricolour of green, white, and orange.
The national flag of Ireland (Irish: bratach na hireann) frequently referred to as the Irish tricolour (trdhathach na hireann) is a vertical tricolour of green (at the hoist), white, and orange.[1][2]
The proportions of the flag are 1:2 (that is to say that, as flown horizontally, the flag is half as high as it is wide). The Irish government has described the symbolism behind each colour as being that of green representing the Gaelic tradition of Ireland, orange representing the followers of William of Orange in Ireland, and white representing the aspiration for peace between them.[3]
Presented as a gift in 1848 to Thomas Francis Meagher from a small group of French women sympathetic to the Irish cause,[4][5] it was not until the Easter Rising of 1916, when it was raised above the General Post Office in Dublin, that the tricolour came to be regarded as the national flag.[6] Meagher was the son of Newfoundland-born mayor of Waterford, Thomas Meagher Jr. However, there are two theories on his inspiration for the flag: the similarly-coloured Newfoundland Tricolour credited in legend as having been created in 1843, though this seems unlikely given the actual known history surrounding the Newfoundland Tricolour; and the French Tricolour.
The flag was adopted in 1916 by the Easter Rising rebels and subsequently by the Irish Republic during the Irish War of Independence (19191921). Its use was continued by the Irish Free State (19221937) and it was later given constitutional status under the 1937 Constitution of Ireland. The tricolour is used by nationalists on both sides of the border as the national flag of the whole island of Ireland since 1916.[7] Thus it is flown by many nationalists in Northern Ireland as well as by the Gaelic Athletic Association.[8]

Design and symbolism[edit]
In relation to the national flag of Ireland, the Constitution of Ireland simply states in Article 7:
The national flag is the tricolour of green, white and orange.[9]
As there are no further statutory requirements in relation to the flag, the Department of the Taoiseach takes general responsibility over matters relating to the flag. In its advisory role, the Department has issued guidelines to assist persons in their use of the national flag.[10] The flag should be rectangular in shape and its length should be two times its width, translating into an aspect ratio of 1:2. The three coloured pales green, white and orange should be of equal size, and vertically disposed. The precise colours of the flag as set by the Department of the Taoiseach are:[10]
Scheme Green White Orange
Pantone 347[11] White 151[12]
Hex triplet #169B62 #FFFFFF #FF883E
RGB 22/155/98 255/255/255 255/136/62
The flag should normally be displayed on a flagstaff, with the green pale positioned next to the flagstaff, at the hoist; the white pale positioned in the centre; and the orange pale positioned at the fly, farthest from the flagstaff. Provided that the correct proportions are observed, the flag may be made to any convenient size.[6]
Symbolism[edit]
The green pale in the flag symbolises Irish republicanism dating back to the Society of United Irishmen in the 1790s.[13] The orange represents the minority who were supporters of King William III, who was of the House of Orange and originally the Stadtholder of the Netherlands, had defeated King James II and his predominantly Irish Catholic army[14] at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. His title came from the Principality of Orange in the south of France that had been a Protestant bastion from the 16th century. It was included in the Irish flag in an attempt to reconcile the Orange Order in Ireland with the Irish independence movement.[citation needed] The white in the centre signifies a lasting truce between the two cultures and a living together in peace.[15] The flag, as a whole, is intended to symbolise the inclusion and hoped-for union of the people of different traditions on the island of Ireland, which is expressed in the Constitution as the entitlement of every person born in Ireland to be part of the independent Irish nation, regardless of ethnic origin, religion or political conviction.[16][17] There are exceptions to the general beneficent theory. Green was also used as the colour of such Irish bodies as the mainly-Protestant and non-sectarian Friendly Brothers of St. Patrick, established in 1751.
Occasionally, differing shades of yellow, instead of orange, are seen at civilian functions. However the Department of the Taoiseach state that this is a misrepresentation which "should be actively discouraged",[6] and that worn-out flags should be replaced.[18] In songs and poems, the colours are sometimes enumerated as "green, white and gold" in song, using poetic license. The Irish government actively discourages this since the Good Friday Agreement was signed in 1998 in an effort to foster peace and unity.[19][20] Variants of different guises are utilised to include -for example, various emblems of Ireland, such as the presidential harp, the four provinces or county arms.[21][22]

A green flag featuring a harp is described as being used by Owen Roe O'Neill in 1642.[23]
Blessing of the Colours by John Lavery
In the late 18th century green had become associated as the colour of revolution. The United Irishmen, founded in the 1790s, where inspired by the French revolution, and used a green flag, to which they had a harp emblazoned.[23] A rival organisation, the Orange Order, whose main strength was in Ulster, and which was exclusively for Protestants, especially members of the Anglican Church of Ireland, was founded in 1795 in memory of King William of Orange and the "Glorious Revolution" of 1688. Following the Irish Rebellion of 1798, which pitted the "green" tradition of the republican United Irishmen against the "orange" tradition of Anglican Protestant Ascendancy loyal to the British Crown, the ideal of a later nationalist generation in the mid-19th century was to make peace between the two traditions and, if possible, to found a self-governing Ireland on such peace and union.
The oldest known reference to the use of the three colours of green, white and orange as a nationalist emblem dates from September 1830 when tricolour cockades were worn at a meeting held to celebrate the French Revolution of that year a revolution which restored the use of the French tricolour.[24] The colours were also used in the same period for rosettes and badges, and on the banners of trade guilds.[24] However, widespread recognition was not accorded to the flag until 1848. At a meeting in his native city of Waterford on 7 March 1848, Thomas Francis Meagher, the Young Ireland leader, first publicly unveiled the flag from a second-floor window of the Wolfe Tone Club as he addressed a gathered crowd on the street below who were present to celebrate another revolution that had just taken place in France.[24][25] It was inspired by the tricolours of France and Newfoundland; Meagher's father was born in Newfoundland.[25] Speeches made a -
