Gabriela was sitting on the kitchen table, doing her homework, while her mother cleaned the dishes.
"Gabriela," said her mother, "Me and your father will be going on a short trip, and we want you to stay at your grandfather's house"
Gabriela was actually excited when she heard this, her mother and father always treated her badly, they shouted and called her names, and beat her with leather belts, to be away from them was, a miracle for her, and a blessing.
She ate some porridge, then went upstairs to get dressed, she put on a comfy woolly pale blue dress that cut a few inches after the knees, the neck line was shaped like a V, and there were no sleeves, a blue ribbon was tied round her waste to give the dress more style, she combed her hair, and put a blue hat with some roses decorated on it, and put some blue shoes and tights to match, she put some of her pajamas, and shirts and trousers in the bag.
Her mother drove her to her grandather's house, this was the day they were leaving, and Gabriela told her mother that she felt quite excited.
Her mother turned to her, with solemn expression on her face, and said quietly: "But in your grandfather's house, it was passed down by many generations, and they say that a grand duke whom was your ancestor had lived there, but assassins broke in and killed him, stealing all his money, so the house went down, but was managed to be kept well. They say that the ghost is still haunting the corridors of the house, and you can sometimes hear his whispers"
Here Gabriela got scared.
"Oh..." she said, firghtened, they said no more until they got there.
The house was big and tall, and had a lovely big garden, it hadn't been taken care of so flowers died and vines and moss grew all over the stone walls and paths, but still, it looked lovely to run through all the undergrowth.
The door was big and black and looked like it might fall, but nontheless, Gabriela knocked on the door, her mother already went away, she felt a little bit scared.
A tall man with grey hair opened the door, he looked gravely down at her.
"Hello my darling" he said, "I'm your grandfather"
She shook his hand and smiled, and carried her suitcase, and went in after him.
The hall was large, the floor was made of creamy beige marble, the stairs were plished well, grand paintings were hung on the walls, it looked very luxirous and well kept.
After she was showed her room where she would stay, she put her suitcase down and sat on the bed.
"I didn't ask mother how long I'd be staying here" she told herself, "I'm such an idiot"
"Don't worry..." said a voice, like a harsh whisper, like... the wind.
She looked round in all directions, was it the ghost?
She looked and stayed still in case anything else came.
Nothing.
She sat in her room reading a book by her favorite author, and only went down to occasionally look around, or go eat, it was her first day and she did not know what exactly she was supposed to do.
After that, the day ended, and she went to brush her teeth.
"Come..." said the whisper.
She looked all around, frightened, she heard nothing after that.
"Who are you?" she asked.
The voice did not answer, but she knew it was the ghost of her ancestor.
When she got in to bed, she couldn't sleep.
Her eyes could not close, she feared the ghost would come.
"...I need you..." she heard it say.
She was almost coming to tears.
When suddenly a figure came, it was a ghost of an old man! He stared at her through those faint white eyes.
"...Listen..." it hissed.
She stared at it from under the bed sheets, she dared not scream.
"I need you... to get me the book..." it said.
"W-W-What book?" she asked it, terrified.
"The Diary..." it said, "In the attic..."
It needn't say anymore.
She ran upstairs to the attic, and rummaged through all the dusty trunks and newspapers, letters and books, through all the old clothes and costumes people wore throught the centuries, until she found it, the old diary.
"Now..." whispered the ghost, "Give it to my love..."
And it faded away.
Gabriela didn't know what it meant. -
She looked all around, and saw a huge trunk, but as she got closer.
It wasn't a trunk!
She rummaged through the diary... and found an old flower.
She looked at the coffin.
Mary Arrogate, 17th November 1458 - 3rd of December 1520.
She put the flower on the grave, and knew that the ghost only wanted peace, for he could not rest withought showing his love to his lover.
And throught her stay there, Gabriela didn't get a single whisper, nor gust of unusual wind.
The ghost of her ancestor was at peace.
