He wrote it after his mother died and while his wife wad dying. The man symbolises himself. He doesn't want to lose Leanor, his wife. The Raven keeps trying to come in, and he says nevermore, as in nevermore will he see Leanor. And he felt death was getting closer and closer to him. He died at 40
