  1) Get in the water.
  2) Get comfortable with the water.
  3) float on your stomach, then on your back.
  4) Get back on your stomach, and start kicking. Keep your toes pointed and don't thrash about like you're being raped. Splashing everywhere isn't productive at all.
  5) if you want, ask someone to show you the breast stroke.
