My advise sing and sing and sing. and if you really want to go up for an audition, if your not chosen and if possible ask the judges what you can do to improve. That's what I did.
Hope that helps you. and Good Luck. -
Sing, sing, sing. Correctly. Use proper air support, breathing technique, and posture. Make sure you specify your proper voice part (Bass, Tenor, Alto, Soprano, etc...) and sing in your own range. Don't stretch too far out of it unless you're working with a vocal coach who can help you expand your range.
Audition and pounce on the opportunities to sing. Learning piano helps as well. Maintain confidence, and keep up the proper technique and habits. Don't yell, scream, or holler. This only damages your vocal chords and can lead to further complications. If you're having an off day, whether it be a cold or something more serious, do not push through it and try to sing. Preserve your voice for when you're completely healthy again. If you sing while the scabs are still on your vocal folds, it can lead to scar tissue forming and vocal nodes. Avoid those at all costs. They can kill your voice in a heartbeat.
Voice lessons are strongly recommended. Professional instruction is a great way to lay down a firm foundation from which you can grow.
Best of luck to you!
