(CONTAINS SPOILERS!)
This movie sucked. The animation was fine. The pacing was fine. But what really upset me the most was the character designs and the overall message. The whole plot of the movie was Drac was going to retire and give his hotel to Mavis and her husband, Johnny. But he gets cold feet, and decides he doesn't want Johnny in charge of his hotel. He lies to Johnny about there being a 'monster law' prohibiting Johnny from owning the location due to being a human. Johnny feels bad about being human, so he turns himself into a monster using a gem, accidentally turning the main group of monsters into humans through this process. The gem later breaks, and Drac has to find a new one with Johnny. Let's talk about the overall human designs of these characters, first. Griffin's human design upsetted people the most. I honestly found it funny how many people were upset that 'the invisible man wasn't hot!' His design made sense to me, as it didn't contradict any past statements about his appearance. Wayne's design as a human and Frankenstein's are the best since they actually follow their monster design's body types, and well, made sense. Murray's design is what upsetted me the most. A character that was large, turned....small? I always imagined Murray would be big. Of course, it would also make sense for him to be skinny, as most of his weight was from wrapping. But then again, there is nothing underneath that wrapping, as he unfolds all the way in one of the movies. SO the wrapping is part of his physical being. More upsetting to me than that was the height. Yes, he's old, but when you get old you don't shrink to 1/2 your height! Also, when Dracula turned human, he aged but not as much as Murray. I will excuse that, however, the character design is still disappointing. I will return momentarily to continue this rant, this time diving into the terrible message, and villainizing of Drac throughout this film. -
So....throughout this film, Drac was villainized for not wanting to give Johnny his hotel. HIS hotel. The one HE created and ran. He was worried about Johnny running it, and can you really blame him? Throughout the film, Johnny is both dumb and ignorant. He doesn't realize Mavis doesn't want him to be a monster. He doesn't notice Drac's struggles of being a human. In fact, throughout the film Drac suffers a lot, and Johnny doesn't notice and/or doesn't react. Gremlins shoved Drac out a plane dangling him by a rope, and Johnny did nothing. He made Drac carry this whole bag of stuff that is like comically five times his size, in the heat, through a jungle, for miles. That is only the tip of the iceberg, as Drac suffers mosquitos, piranha bites, nearly falls off a cliff to his death, etc. Later in the movie, Johnny loses control and turns into a raging Godzilla-sized beast, and Drac attempts to try to turn him back by apologizing. Apologizing for not giving Johnny HIS hotel, the one he had control over. Despite lying, Drac was valid for not wanting to give his hotel to Johnny, and he shouldn't have even been expected to. Johnny was not fit to run the hotel, as, in the beginning, he couldn't even keep a secret, spilling the beans to Drac the second he got the chance. Lying was wrong, but it shouldn't have made Drac the villain. Johnny caused all the problems, by turning into a monster in the first place. Idk why I felt the need to post this, this movie just triggered me in so many ways. thanks for reading if you did, and have a nice day! :)
