In ancient times, they were used as weapons- they had spiked or serated edges that could slice into almost anything, and the Japanese prided themselves on the quality of these. The designs that they have on fans today that you buy at the store aren't just pretty things that people desided to put on them these days. In the past, they would paint them with cherry blossoms to blend in better with surroundings in Japan.) -
