Emerson also lived up to his word. If Thoreau was trying to do what Thoreau did, then he would have also lived up to his word. Emerson took regular breaks from society. He would take long walks or go camping to just get closer to nature. Thoreau on the other hand, while believing that every man should work for himself and that nobody should have to provide for the government, had absolutely no issue with letting his friend pay his rent for him.
Thoreau also was so self righteous that he laughed at his jailors after he was arrested for refusing to pay rent. He claimed, They can cage my body, but my mind is free. It is more free now than ever. He was actually so full of himself as to feel smug about being locked in prison.
Thoreau may have been an accomplished writer. He may have influenced countless people since his works were published, but his legacy in itself is full of flaws and pot holes. The man was a hypocrite and drastically egotistical. He doesnt deserve near the acclaim that Emerson has.
