Regret
She does not walk,
She strides.
Eyes set on a mark,
Head held high.
Her steady eyes
Dart to the side:
"Has someone looking my way
Caught my eye?"
The second she turns,
The whispering stops.
With a flip of her hair, she continues to walk
Towards them, the voices drop.
Walking past them, the rhythm goes on
The chorus of voices, an endless song.
She ignores the words, treating such as lies
All the while, tears sting her eyes.
She thinks to herself, eyes open wide,
"What must I do to keep the vultures at bay?"
Thinking it through, continuing her stride,
"Those who hang on my every breath, every word I come to say?
The tears disapear: she knows her fate.
Tormented from now on: she was too late
To turn back time, undo that one mistake.
If only the past never happened, had a way to clean the slate.
But as she ignored the mindless chatter,
She knew she had to come to terms:
The outsider's words didn't matter.
This was just another thing she was destined to learn.
