It was the very last day of school. Music was jamming at the pool party. My father had come to take me to the production of Annie, where I would be playing Annie Bennet Warbucks. That was the last time I ever thought I'd see him- Daniel Marzo, the short, down-to-earth fifth grader. It was my first crush, he was, and I cried during the standing ovation, wishing I could see his smiling face in the audiance.
"What's wrong, Dakota?" Jamie, an averaged sized brunette who looked like a red statue in her apple-colored outfits. "You just got a standing ovation!" Jamie was a fourteen year old girl who possesed the role of Kate. We were sitting backstage waiting for our parents to pick us up.
"I know..." I said. "Last day of school today, not quite my personal cup of tea. I'll never be school president again."
"You don't know that!" Jamie assured me. "It was my last day of being middle school president, and I'm determind to have that title again in twelfth grade. I'm sure you'll be class president in eighth."
"You think?" I asked quietly, my thoughts on friends who were going to a different middle school. "I might not be able to make up a good speech in eighth grade..."
"Don't doubt yourself." Jamie looked up, and saw her family, her mother colored and her father white. And then there was this boy who looked about my age...he had a mildly pointed nose and dark tan skin, with a perfectly round head. He walked over to his sister to give her a high five.
"Great job, Jam-I mean, Kate." he said, with the looks of a thriteen year old but the quiet voice of an eleven year old. He turned to me. "Is that Annie?"
"Yes." I beamed. He looked at me in the eye, and I instantly knew that I was in love-love at first sight. "My real name's Dakota, Dakota-"
"Fanning?" He finished for me. No..."You were a really good actress, and singer."
"Dakota Linsade, and thank you." I said with a twinkle in my eye. "You into acting?"
"I even persuaded my sister into getting next year's school play to Hairspray." He said. He liked drama too! "She was school president."
"She told me." I said. Wait a minute- I was deep into a conversation with a cute guy that I just met. This must mean he likes me too! "Theodore Rosevelt Jr. High, I'm going there next year. And now I just HAVE to audition."
"Well, I'm trying out for Seaweed." He said looking at the color of his skin. "I'll definatly have to be casted as a black person, it's my heritage, anyway." He slowly examined my features. "You'd make a good...Penny Pingleton."
Penny Pingleton? Seaweed's girlfriend? As he walked away with his sister and parents, I thought about the rare but wonderful love at first sight. -

I waited all summer for school to start. Assigned to block 6-3, I got onto the bus the first morning and sat int the only open seat, next to a tall tan boy with a round face. He looked strangley familiar.
"Can I sit here?" I asked nervously. E[no urls] really didn't want to sit next to a boy. Yet again, he WAS kind of cute..."Everywhere else is full." Great, now I sounded like Harry Potter!
I was about to tell myself "whatever", when the boy said, "Is that Dakota Fanning?" OMG! It was the boy I met backstage in June during the production of Annie! The boy I kind of liked....
"Sure, you can sit here." He said. "By the way, I'm Jerome Beacher. I'm a soccer player and an actor."
"Me to..." I said. "Just add girl scouts and singing, oh, and piano to that list."
"Well, pleased to meet you-again, Da....kota." He said with a smile. His eyes were very blue. I couldn't take my hazel eyes off of them as I sat down, and the wierd Italian bus driver, Luigi, took off for T.R. Junior High. -
BEFORE I CONTINUE:
@fufe: I'm making it right now. Do you like it? -
Yup

The bus drive was full of conversation between Jerome and I. I found out his position in soccer was left wing: me too! He also told me that he played a winkie in the Wizard of Oz. Me to! He liked my second favorite color- sky blue! And as we talked I realized that my love at first sight case was leading to me liking this guy- also in block 6-3.
And as we talked I thought more and more about Daniel, my previous crush. The same one who played with me, and wound up having two girl friends that he never even talked to before that. Forget him, I thought. You won't see him again until high school.
On the other side of the bus, sat Daniel's two old girlfriends, Beth and Erynne. Beth was nice and sweet, so was Erynne, most of the time...she was still one of my BFFs, though. I didn't really know Beth too well, but we used to be tight and we planned on being good friends this year.
Erynne and Beth had welcomed my friend Ginger and I into their clique when most of ours went to a different school. They weren't terible company, sometimes ditzy and they could act popular, but they were kind people and good friends at heart. Most of us were in 6-3 with Jerome, so we planned on sitting together after lunch. They all wanted to talk about the upcoming 6th grade dance, where we could meet everybody. Dates were allowed, and Erynne was eyeing Mack Dennis Leigh, so we were going to be like her wing-girls. -

I think I'll start Chapter 3 now.

The school bell rang and my homeroom teacher announced that it was the first day of school, September 8th, 1998. Erynne and Beth were buzzing about Mack's new haircut, while Ginger and a girl named Amantha (NOT AMANDA!) talked about the math teacher, Mr. Greystone, who we were supposed to have. He was supposed to be really open and funloving, with little concern for the rules.
Jerome was talking to his friend, Mack Klyter. Mack was on Jerome's soccer team, he played stopper. Mack was a short, shy looking boy, with auburn hair and dark brown eyes. He was always smiling, as if he just wanted to say something but he didn't know what, so he just gave out a big grin instead.
Meanwhile, I was telling Patrica Penito, a short, round, Portuguese girl, about my soccer try-outs later.
From behind me, a short, geeky looking boy told us to be quiet, we were "interupting class".
"It's home-room on the first day, kid." Patricia said. "Give it a rest. Geez."
"Okay class, settle down. I have to annouce something quickly before first period." The geeky kid smirked at us, as the teacher told the homeroom class about the 6th grade social in one week. "Although it's just an oppurtunity for you to get to know everyone else, you are also going to have your first oppurtunity to have a date to a dance. -
The bell rang immediatly, resulting in a huddle of nervous boys who really wanted to ask a girl to the dance.
"I saw the way you were looking at that Jerry boy." Ginger told me in the hallway. "You like someone besides Daniel already?"
"Well, kinda..."I sighed. "I miss Sarah, Daniel, Kylee, Tiffany, I miss everyone. But I guess it's time to make new friends."
"That's not really what I was expecting you to say." Ginger admitted. "I was expecting to hear that you want him to ask you out!"
"The only buisiness I have in the dance right now is getting Mack to go with Erynne." I muttered. "Besides, JEROME's already got a crush on someone he's known for a while...isn't it obvious? All boys do..."
"No!" Ginger rose her voice. "Girl, you are my best friend and you've had your heart broken WAY to many times in your 12 year life-span! People don't like people if they don't have a good reason. Jerome must be really nice to you or something!" -
Ginger, unlike me, is boy crazy. Completely. She has had a different crush every month for the past three years. But she was right. Every time I had a crush on a boy, it was because he was just playing. It happened LITERALLY EVERY TIME! The worst was with Daniel. He was my best friend. He told me all of his jokes, and he let me keep his pet spider stashed in my desk in fourth grade. When I was nervous at student council elections, he tried to cheer me up, and he gave me advice on the ways I could do well on my speech. In fifth grade, he left his oral book report presentation post just to come and see mine.
But then he asked Erynne out. ERYNNE! Erynne who liked three other boys except for him. She says yes, and then all of a sudden she's madly in love. Two weeks later, she won't even look at Daniel. So he breaks up with her. We're always winding up in the same place at the same time and then he admits that he has a NEW girlfriend, Beth. He was staring at me at the pool party the night school ended. He cried over chosing Erynne on the bus ride home that day. And then he said goodbye. And then I meet Jerome. I get this wierd feeling in the pit of my stomache as if I actually liked this new guy.
"WHY do you like Jerome?" Ginger demanded. "I know you like him! It's OBVIOUS!" She grabbed my shoulders and shook me back and forth. "TELL ME!"
"He's cute!" I yelled, taking her hands off of me. "I just think he's cute. That's all."
