AS I WRITE THIS TO YOU: A Memorial Day Poem
As I write this to you,
I can't help but think,
No matter how loud I turn up my iPod,
The music can never drown my sad thoughts.
Every year, I try to hold back my tears,
This year, I'm failing.
I see the flags they put on the veterans' graves,
Rectangles of red, white, and blue, blowing in the wind,
And I can't help but think:
Soldiers. The flags stand straight and tall like the soldiers they mark the graves of.
And it makes me sad,
Those seemingly endless rows of flags.
Some childish thoughts have entered my mind today.
For instance,
If I spit from the top of this building, how long would it take to reach the ground?
Or,
What if that person became immortal? Then their name and birth date would always be there, but not their death date...
But I wasn't childish.
Because I was helpful.
Because I knew what to do.
Because I cared.
As I write this to you,
I want you to know,
I love you.
I miss you. -
I love you, Grandpa. I miss you. I wish I had gotten to know you better. Rest in peace.
Love,
Your granddaughter -
